Big 12 Roundup: Texas-Texas Tech style

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Can Taylor Potts maintain his big fantasy output against the Longhorns? (Icon SMI)

Texas travels to Lubbock to face Texas Tech in our prime time game, and with the way the Longhorn offense is playing right now this one could be up for grabs.

In fact, Red Raider QB Taylor Potts is the only player in this game who I’m leaning towards having a good game, but there is one huge caveat to that: last season, when a Texas defense of similar talent and tactical caliber as this one held the Red Raiders to 3 first half points, Mike Leach made some genius adjustments to score 21 in the second half of a close loss.

Does new Coach Tuberville know the adjustments to make to an offense still based around the Air Raid if Texas gets into a defensive rhythm? This could be the first time since 2000 that both these teams fail to break 30 points in this game. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Roundup: Giddyup for Week Two 2010

Florida State @ Oklahoma

Is DeMarco Murray the next 30-carry per game Sooner stud RB? (Icon SMI)

Given how OU was torched by the Utah State passing game in week 1, Christian Ponder and the FSU receivers are strong plays for ACC owners once again. On the Big 12 side, FSU has had a notoriously weak defense of late, and Demarco Murray could duplicate his monster numbers. Ryan Broyles appears to be a strong play as well.

Troy @ Oklahoma State

Kendall Hunter is primed for another outstanding week here. What’ll be interesting to watch for is the Brandon Weeden to Justin Blackmon connection that produced 3 scores through the air in week 1. Blackmon could develop into the offense’ primary receiving weapon.

Georgia Tech @ Kansas

After being upset by North Dakota State, does anyone predict Kansas will do well against the defending ACC Champions? Until this team shows some signs of life, any fantasy play from this team’s roster is risky.

Missouri St @ Kansas St

As usual, Daniel Thomas should pick up the bulk of the stats in what should be an easy win for KSU.

FCB FANTASY PLAYER OF THE WEEK…Steven Sheffield, QB, Texas Tech

Monday, October 12th, 2009

StevenSheffieldWe figured, at some time this season, that a Texas Tech QB would be the top producer of the week.

We did not figure, it would be the second-team QB.

In the Texas Tech win in Lubbock on Saturday, a 66-14 stomping of Kansas State, Red Raider backup QB Steven Sheffield (photo,CroixTorres/Raider Nation.com) riddled the KSU Wildcats defense for 490 yards and 7 TDs…earning our Fantasy College Blitz Fantasy Player of the Week for Week Six.

Sheffield, a junior from Pflugerville, TX, filled in for the injured starter Taylor Potts, who was hurt in the Red Raiders victory over New Mexico the previous week.  In the New Mexico game, Sheffield threw for 3 TDs after Potts left that game.

Big 12 Bookends: Pott’s Luck

RyanBroyles-1Week 2 Notable Performances

Taylor Potts had yet another excellent week, throwing for 456 yards and 7 TDs. There’s not a QB in the nation throwing for better fantasy numbers than Potts so far. Surprisingly, Lyle Leong and Tramain Swindall were the primary targets this week, each going over 100 yards after catching 55 and 0 respectively in Week 1. Leong, a high school teammate of Potts, may be asserting his position in the receiving corps.

Oklahoma’s offense erupted against hapless Idaho State, scoring 64 points as the conference high. As expected, the offense became more run-oriented, and Demarco Murray topped 100 yards rushing as well as being the team’s second-leading receiver. Ryan Broyles (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) remains the only true receiving threat, catching 3 TDs in a 155 yard performance. Read the rest of this entry →
