Triage Time: It Hurts…

September 6th, 2010 by Dr. William Carroll

RB Mark Ingram, Alabama – Knee

As usual in Tuscaloosa, Nick Saban is keeping a stranglehold on injury news. We know that Dr. James Andrews did the surgery and that thetimeline is 2-3 weeks. With that timeline and surgery, the only real possibility is a torn meniscus (cartilage). With someone as talented as Dr. Andrews doing the arthroscopic surgery, it is reasonable to assume that Ingram will be back in practice by the end of this week, dressed, but will not play, for the Penn State game and ready to play against Duke the following week.

RB Donald Buckram, UTEP – Knee

Buckram’s problem was confirmed to be a contusion (bruise) . He did not play in the opening game against Arkansas Pine Bluff, but will definitely be available next week for the Miners Conference USA opener against the high scoring Houston Cougars.

TE Jordan Reed, Florida Gators – Knee

Reed suffered a knee contusion the week before the opener against Miami of Ohio and did not play. Although he is listed as “questionable” this week, the word is that he will see some action, primarily when Florida utilizes its version of the Wildcat formation. The injury should not hamper Reed’s speed or pass catching abilities.

QB Bryant Moniz, Hawaii – Concussion

Moniz was having a great game against USC, passing for over 250 yards.  Then he suffered a helmet to helmet hit, leaving the game and did not return. He was examined by the team physicians and cleared to return to practice on Tuesday. Moniz will definitely be on the field when the Rainbow Warriors meet Army this week.

WR Tandon Doss, Indiana – Groin

Doss has been battling the groin strain the entire pre-season. The injury effects his ability to change speed and direction more than it does his straight away speed. He was withheld from the season opener and probably won’t play this week against Western Kentucky. Best educated guess is that he will return the following week and gets some reps against Akron and be ready, barring reinjury, to go full-out against Michigan in the Hoosier’s Big Ten opener on October 2nd.

QB Kyle Padron, SMU – Hand

Padron, one of a long line of college quarterbacks that played at Southlake, Texas high school, played well against Texas Tech before injuring his wrist. The injury has been diagnosed as a sprain and he is listed as “day to day”.  However, he may not be available for the Mustangs Conference USA opener via UAB at Ford Field on Saturday. Coach June Jone’s offense is definitely quarterback centered and Padron must be pain free and able to pass and run if he is to play in this system. Best bet that he will limited duty against UAB and return to the starting unit the following week against Washington State.

QB Jordan Wynn, Utah – Thumb

Wynn, fresh off a 200 + yard passing day in the win over Pitt, is considered “day to day” by the team physician and the coaching staff as he attempts to recover from a sprained thumb on his passing hand. Winn will be available for duty this weekend, but probably will not start. The Utes next real challenge will not come until October when they face Iowa State and they will definitely need a healthy Wynn at QB if they are going to make a run at a BCS berth.

WR Vidal Hazleton, Cincinnati – Knee

Hazleton transferred from USC to Cincinnati to get more playing time and he was having a great game catching passes and returning kicks until he tore his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament which provides anterior-posterior stability to the knee) while running back a kick in the second half. Hazleton will undergo surgery and is out for the season. It is unknown at this time whether Hazleton will seek a medical redshirt to attempt to get another season of eligibility.
