WAC 2008 ALL-FANTASY TEAM
December 12th, 2008 by Daniel Freer
The “Pistol” offense…you see it used more and more…in college football and pro football.
That “sawed-off” shotgun formation, in which the QB lines up three yards behind center…and the RB/TB lines up two/three yards behind the QB….that is the Pistol.
Many have copied the Pistol, originated and developed by Nevada head coach Chris Ault and his Wolf Pack assistants over the past few years. However, only Ault and the Pack have the perfect QB to fire the Pistol.
Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick (photo, thanks IconSMI), our Fantasy College Blitz: WAC Fantasy Player of the Year, is that perfect QB.
The sophomore from Turlock, CA, (Pitman HS) took over the starting QB role in the middle of his freshman season, and has been unstoppable since then. His breakout game at Boise State last season (a 69-67 OT thriller loss for the Wolf Pack) put the WAC on notice.
And, in 2008, it appeared that the WAC needed more notice…as Kaepernick ran and passed all over opposition defenses…rushing for over 1000 yards and 16 TDs (best among all FBS QBs in 2008) and threw for over 2000 yards and 18 TDs (statistics through November 22nd games). The Wolf Pack signal-caller is a rare blend of big body, big arm, and big legs.
Joining Kaepernick on the 2008 WAC All-Fantasy Team are
(Statistics quoted are through November 22nd games)
QUARTERBACK:
COLIN KAEPERNICK – Nevada: (see above)
RUNNING BACKS:
VAI TAUA – Nevada: After Luke Lippincott went down with a season-ending injury, Taua took over as the featured Wolf Pack RB and just ran wild, with over 1300 yards rushing and 15 total TDs.
IAN JOHNSON – Boise State: He may not get the yards like he used to, but Johnson still rushed for 10 TDs, and became a terror on special teams kick/punt coverage this season.
DANIEL PORTER – Louisiana Tech: One of the key players in the resurgence of the Bulldog program, rushing for just over 1000 yards and 7 TDs.
RECEIVERS:
CHRIS WILLIAMS – New Mexico State: Another fine season for the Aggie WR, averaging over 100 yards receiving per game, and caught 9 TD passes.
DAVID RICHMOND – San Jose State: The big and athletic Spartans WR had over 800 yards receiving and 7 TD catches, despite all the QB injuries that hit SJSU.
MARKO MITCHELL – Nevada: The top target for Colin Kaepernick, hauling in nearly 900 yards and 7 TDs receiving for the Humanitarian Bowl-bound Wolf Pack.
KICKER:
BRETT JAEKLE – Nevada: Scored nearly 100 points this season, and has been a steady and consistent kicker all throughout his Wolf Pack career.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:
BOISE STATE: The reason why they won the WAC, again. The Broncos were one of the top DEF/ST in the nation, and CB/PR Kyle Wilson arguably is the top return-man in the land. The only liability with the BSU DEF/ST was their offense….which gave up a few TDs on turnovers.
