Who’s on Your Fantasy Heisman Watch?

September 5th, 2008 by John Huss

Graham Harrell Before the start of the season, the FCB crew was discussing who would be in contention for the Heisman this year.  One of the owners thought it would be interesting to write commentary throughout the season about our Heisman views.  I thought about it and stated we should take it one step further.  Many of our viewers come to this site based on their passion about the fantasy angle of college football.  So to create more interaction on that, we wanted to stir up things as we unveil our ideas on who is the Fantasy Heisman.  During the season, we’ll have a watch list going on our Top 10 candidates.  Since the universe of players is so deep in college, I’m sure this will create some debate as names are left off the list.

Of course in fantasy college football, stats are going to weigh in heavily to the decision making process.  However, playing for a small school won’t be a roadblock with our list.  We’ll welcome freshmen sensations that dominate in their first year (ala Michael Crabtree).  Whether the player’s real team won won’t matter to us but if his performance possibly cost his fantasy owners a win, that could knock them down a peg (Tim Tebow).  Or a blow up game may just propel that player into the mix (PJ Hill, you have my gratitude).

Let’s start with the Preseason List, which will go 12 names long simply due to a tie for the last spot.  the list is based on the votes of the 4 owners of Fantasy College Blitz, plus a guest voter.  Points were assigned starting at 10 points for a 1st place vote, all the way down to 1 point for a 10th place vote.  I’m not sure anyone will be surprised by the initial list of players selected to have a shot at the Fantasy Heisman.

Now, players have a game under their belt, although playing a FCS school barely fits the bill.  Based on that first game, here is how things have shifted on the list:

The biggest surprise?  Tim Tebow got the boot, although it was by a small margin.  He could easily find his way back on the list if he does something for his fantasy teams.  However, games like he had against Hawaii just aren’t going to cut it for a top 3 pick in most fantasy drafts.  The new names to the list are PJ Hill and Chase Clement who had great starts to their seasons.  Just missing the cut are guys like QB Nate Davis (he won’t be off this list for long, right Navy?) and RB Damion Fletcher.

There, that’s our breakdown.  However, don’t let us have all the fun.  Here is a link to our Forum where I’ll start a discussion about the Fantasy Heisman List. We’d like to hear from you.
