2008 MOUNTAIN WEST PREVIEW

By Daniel Freer | August 3, 2008

While maybe not the top overall conference in terms of fantasy talent, the 2008 version of the Mountain West Conference will provide many fantasy-friendly players (and not just from BYU).

However, and probably more so than any other conference, a number of top fantasy producers in the MWC return from injury, and/or trying to re-establish themselves having already returned from injury.  Definitely, the MWC programs are worth watching as the season progresses.

AIR FORCE FALCONS

HEAD COACH:  Troy Calhoun (Second season, AFA grad, former OC for Houston Texans)

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR:  Blaine Morgan, Clay Hendrix (First season, promoted AFA assistant coaches)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: Gone are standouts RB-WR Chad Hall and QB Shaun Carney, so the Falcons must replace those key performers.  Look for RBs Ty Paffett , Todd Newell ,and Savier Stephens to take up the running slack, while senior Shea Smith takes over the QB duties.  For the TE leagues, Travis Dekker is a fantasy consideration.  Head Coach Troy Calhoun had an excellent debut in his first season running the AFA, but must replace three starters on the O-line…making it a little difficult to recommend specific AFA players…except PK Ryan Harrison , who hit 19-27 FGs last season, including 3-4 from over 50 yards.

SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS

HEAD COACH:  Chuck Long (Third Season, 1985 Heisman runner-up)
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR:  Del Miller (Third Season, former OC at Kansas State)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: The Aztecs do not have many fantasy considerations for 2008, but the one player who you should keep an eye on is WR Darren Mougey , a big target who also was the starting QB at one time.  Of course, someone has to get him the ball, and a QB must emerge out of Ryan Lindley , Drew Westling , and Kelsey SokoloskiBrandon Sullivan and Attiyah Henderson will challenge for the top RB position, but both are not real fantasy prospects.  Keep on eye on Mougey possibly returning to QB if the offense struggles.

TCU HORNED FROGS

HEAD COACH:  Gary Patterson (Eight Season, 62-25 overall record at TCU)
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR:  Mike Schultz (Eleventh Season at TCU)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: A team with a lot of talent, but it does not translate into fantasy production.  QB Andy Dalton threw for nearly 2500 yards last season, but only 10 TDs.  RBs Aaron Brown and Joseph Turner should get the bulk of the rushing carries, but their individual production limits fantasy value.  The top returning WR is Donald Massey , but he scored exactly 0 TDs in 2007.  A sleeper TE is Shae Reagan , who missed half the season last year, and averaged 17.5 yards per catch before being injured.

UNLV REBELS

HEAD COACH:  Mike Sanford (Fourth Season, former OC at Utah under Urban Meyer)
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR:  Todd Berry (Second Season, former head coach at Army)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: Keep an eye on RB Frank Summers , a big RB who should benefit with most of the Rebels O-Line returning.  QB duties should go to either Omar Clayton or Travis Dixon …both QBs are mobile and improving their passing skills…with the advantage going to Clayton heading into 2008.  WRs Ryan Wolfe and Casey Flair catch a lot of balls, but not a lot of TDs (2, 3, in 2007, respectively).  Any improvement in the passing game makes them more valuable…look for them especially during free-agency/supplemental time.  Also watch for WR Rodelin Anthony , who averaged almost 16 yards per catch on his 19 receptions in 2007.  With nine starters back on offense, UNLV could be one of those surprise teams emerging in 2008.

UTAH UTES

HEAD COACH:  Kyle Whittingham (Fourth Season, former Urban Meyer assistant)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: If he can stay healthy, QB Brian Johnson is a worthy draft-day consideration…but he is still nowhere near the QB he was in 2005, when he was one of the top fantasy QBs in the land.  The best fantasy consideration, though, is RB Darrell Mack , who ran for 1204 yards, and scored 15 TDs total in 2007…and most of the Ute O-Line is returning.  The WR corps is questionable, with WR Marquis Wilson being the best consideration as he is a big-play type.  Bradon Godfrey led Utah in receptions last season (50), but averaged just over 10 yards per catch.  The wild-card among the WRs is Brent Casteel , probably the most talented Ute WR who is coming off an ACL injury.  Also, JUCO WRs David Reed and Aiona Key , could see a lot of action.  The Utes have good athletes, but it will be best to wait for free-agency/supplemental time to grab their players.

WYOMING COWBOYS

HEAD COACH:  Joe Glenn (Sixth Season, 26-33 overall record)

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR:  Bob Cole (First Season, former OC at Montana, Florida A&M)

ANALYSIS/KEY PLAYERS: Wyoming was disappointing on offense last season, finishing last in total offense in the MWC.  New OC Bob Cole prefers a ball-control game with rushing and short passes, so this should bode well for RBs Devin Moore and Wynel Seldon , who are speedy backs who catch passes out of the backfield.  Even though they share carries, both are good late fantasy draft picks.  QB Karsten Sween was a bust last season, and may not beat out challengers Ian Hetrick and JUCO import Dax Crum .  WR Greg Bolling is the top returning receiver, but averaged just over 10 yards per grab last season.  For TE leagues, check out TE Jesson Salyards , who caught 10 passes last season as a backup.  The Cowboys return their entire starting O-Line, so their numbers should improve…especially with RBs Moore and Seldon.
