2009 WAC ALL-FANTASY TEAM

December 11th, 2009 by Daniel Freer

ColinKaepernick2I wanna dump him…he is a bust“.

I heard a lot of this talk early in the 2009 season from fantasy players in regard to our WAC Fantasy Player of the Year.  I advised everyone concerned to stay with this player….he will eventually have a break-out season.

Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick (photo, thanks USA Today), our Fantasy College Blitz – Western Athletic Conference Fantasy Player of the Year, did not win the honor because he made this humble scribe look like a genius.  He wins the honor for being, arguably, the most productive player in college football for the last two-thirds of the season.

The junior from Turlock, CA (Pitman HS) Pistol-whipped his opponents, passing for 1734 yards and 16 TDs, and, rushing for another 1126 yards and scoring 16 TDs (stats quoted through November 21st games).   Kaepernick was also our 2008 FCB WAC Fantasy Player of the Year.

Joining Kaepernick on the WAC All-Fantasy Team are…

(Note:  All staistics quoted are through November 21st games)

————————————————

QUARTERBACK

Colin Kaepernick – Nevada: You know you are a big-time fantasy producer when you beat out Boise State QB Kellen Moore and his near-perfect season.

————————————————-

RUNNING BACKS

Ryan Matthews – Fresno State: Rushed for nearly 1500 yards and 14 TDs…and put up big numbers against the better teams…including the 200+ yards and 3 long TD runs against Boise State earlier in the season.

Robert Turbin – Utah State: A true breakout star in a conference loaded with offensive talent….Turbin rushed for 1183 yards and 10 TDs, while getting 348 yards and 3 TDs receiving for the improved Aggies.

Vai Taua – Nevada: One of the three 1000+ yard rushers Nevada produced in 2009 (with Colin Kaepernick and RB Luke Lippincott), Taua rushed for nearly 1200 yards and 9 TDs, adding 270 yards receiving….all while playing with an elbow injury for most of the season.

RECEIVERS

Austin Pettis – Boise State: Pettis (photo, right, thanks Tri-City Herald)Miami Ohio Boise St Football had 850 yards receiving and 14 TDs…and may have been the most consistent WR in the land, catching a TD pass in the Broncos first ten games this season.

Titus Young – Boise State: Young totaled over 800 yards receiving and 9 TD catches, had 3 rushing TDs, and 2 kickoff return TDs…and along with Austin Pettis, one of the most dangerous receiving tandems in the land.

Greg Salas – Hawaii: Although the Warriors lost starting QB Greg Alexander in the middle of the season, Salas still accumulated over 1400 yards receiving and 8 TDs.

KICKER

Kyle Brotzman – Boise State: If you exclude the opening game struggles vs Oregon, Brotzman had an All-American season, and scored 100 points for the nation’s top scoring offense in 2009.

——————————————————

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

Boise State: Continuing their usual dominance over the WAC, the Bronco defense got their usual share of turnovers, sacks…and, their special teams scored 3 TDs.
