PODCAST: ACC Preview with Jeremy Shory

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Since 2004, the Atlantic Coast Conference lags all others in offensive production – but there are some potentially strong individual fantasy performers in 2010. Maybe even Heisman Trophy hopefuls in Jacory Harris and Christian Ponder?

ACC correspondent Jeremy Shory and host Vince Mullins break down the talent-and-scandal-ridden UNC defense, get excited about the Miami Hurricanes and find some value WRs for your 2010 fantasy team.

Vince’s Minimalist QB Cheatsheet: A New Paradigm

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

A simpler life is really all I want for Christmas.

Stephen Garcia sacked by Georgia

Do not let Stephen Garcia sack your season - just leave him off your cheatsheet. (Icon SMI)

Perhaps it is because I turned 40 this year, maybe the weight of the overflowing closet and storage bunker, but most likely the motivator is that October 4 arrival of my first child  – wrap it all together and I just have this overwhelming need to simplify tasks, work more productively, and leave time for what I deem the important things in life. ZenHabits.net remains a weekly meditation for me on the subject, and I suggest you try it out.

So how does this apply to fantasy college football? A fair question. For our readers it really means three things;

    • I will be producing less print content in-season and focusing more on podcasting and audio where my true media passions lie.
    • I would like that lesser load to leave me more time to interact with readers, whether on Twitter or email.
    • You need a more streamlined and effective way to prepare your cheat sheets.

I will start off with the QB List – and for all FBS, my cheat sheet stands around 40 names. Sure, I could rank all 120 in order, but should I really sweat whether to put Stephen Garcia (right) above Ben Chappell? Doesn’t that just lead to more clutter on my cheatsheets anyway since I NEVER planned on selecting either one? Plus, unless I have the #1 or #2 overall pick I am not going QB for any of my drafts. Yours may differ. After the jump, my pre-camp minimalist QB Cheatsheet and my rationale.

Oh, and do not fret if you long for the long form of Fantasy College Blitz cheatsheets – CFO Drew Smith and Tim Dady “Base” are burning the candles on both ends and crunching numbers and spreadsheets as I type, with the August 1 debut of our 2010 Cheatsheet Customizer. THAT will have 100s at each position to help you with your specific league setups.

      Ohio Bobcats 2010 Preview

      Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

For a football program that has playing as long as Ohio has, the Bobcats have only four bowl games to their credit, two of those have come under the Frank Solich era. This program has not won the MAC since 1968 but Solich has taken them to the championship game two times in the past four years. Ohio has six starters back on both sides of the ball along with some real star power. Considering the defense ranked 28th in the nation last year and the offense ranked 78th it’s clear where the Bobcats need to focus on this fall in order to move up from the contender to the champion. NIU Huskies 2010 Preview

      Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

The Huskies continue to find their identity under third year coach Jerry Kill. The Huskies have gone to consecutive bowl games and had a signature moment beating Purdue in 2009. Yet under Kill, the Huskies remain 0-11 against teams with winning records including two straight bowl losses. The program is still trying to fully capitalize on a new end zone building built in 2007 to attract upper-tier recruits. This past February NIU lost three key recruits to BCS schools at the last minute. Also, entering the spring defensive end is Jake Coffman, who led the team with 8.5 sacks, elected not to return for his senior year. Tailback Me’co Brown, a solid RB and key player on special teams, decided to leave the program. Despite a few question marks there is still hope due to over twenty returning lettermen on each side of the ball. Read the rest of this entry →

      Hacking: 2010 Fantasy Defense Rankings

      Monday, July 19th, 2010

Starting with Phil Steele’s 2010 projected defense rankings, but I ranked team rush D and team pass D separately, then used my distance theorem to come up with our first fantasy focused total defense ranking.

      UCF pops Cane

Can UCF defense help knock off NC State and Kansas State in 2010? We feel confident the Knights can help your fantasy season. (Icon SMI)

I then overlaid total rank of opponent OLs to be faced during the season, which led to some big surprises for your draft prep – several of the top projected Ds also face the nation’s worst OLs to amplify their badassitude.

Teams like Iowa (10), North Carolina (1, pre-sanctions?), Miami (FL) (4), Alabama (8), and Florida (6) are sure to be among the 1st Ds off the board on draft day, but may end up producing similar numbers to those 2nd-tier defenses with easier schedules like Southern Miss (25), UCF (40) or surprising Kent State (46) when it’s all said and done.

Below are the rankings, then the attachment illustrates the full power of this Death Star with conference, division, AQ status (to help you sort if playing AQ only) and all the individual variables discussed above. I bolded the Top 12 in each category (Top 10%) and italicized the bottom 10%.
