Big 12 Bookends: Pott’s Luck

September 17th, 2009 by James Lawrence

RyanBroyles-1Week 2 Notable Performances

Taylor Potts had yet another excellent week, throwing for 456 yards and 7 TDs. There’s not a QB in the nation throwing for better fantasy numbers than Potts so far. Surprisingly, Lyle Leong and Tramain Swindall were the primary targets this week, each going over 100 yards after catching 55 and 0 respectively in Week 1. Leong, a high school teammate of Potts, may be asserting his position in the receiving corps.

Oklahoma’s offense erupted against hapless Idaho State, scoring 64 points as the conference high. As expected, the offense became more run-oriented, and Demarco Murray topped 100 yards rushing as well as being the team’s second-leading receiver. Ryan Broyles (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) remains the only true receiving threat, catching 3 TDs in a 155 yard performance.Zac Robinson and the Oklahoma State offense had a much worse-than-expected outing against Houston. In the losing effort, Kendall Hunter was injured and is being listed as doubtful for Week 3.

With their freshman quarterback struggling against Bowling Green, Missouri turned to Derrick Washington on the ground, to the tune of 120 yards and a late touchdown to clinch the game.

Colt McCoy turned in yet another 300+ yard passing performance for Texas, throwing for 337 and 3 TDs and then tacking on 44 yards and a TD on the ground. Jordan Shipley led the team in receptions with 7, but it was James Kirkendoll and Dan Buckner who led the receiving corps in yards.

In his first game back for the Jayhawks, Kansas WR Dezmon Briscoe hauled in 154 yards receiving but was kept out of the end zone against UTEP.

And finally, Zac Lee had a productive week for the Cornhuskers, completing passes to 11 different receivers and finishing with a stat line of 340 yards and 4 TDs against Arkansas State. Lee is unlikely to duplicate this feat against his team’s week 3 opponent, a road game at Virginia Tech.

Week 3′s Potential Big Numbers

Saturday night’s primatime matchup, Texas Tech @ Texas, has shootout written all over it. With the Red Raiders having been unable to establish the running game against inferior opposition, Leach may take to the air almost entirely so win or lose, Taylor Potts should put up big numbers. On the Texas side, though Mack Brown denies any motivation for revenge, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Longhorns tack on an extra score or two if things are going their way late in the game – to make a strong statement for the polls where USC is very close on Texas’ heels. Both QBs and any WRs from either team that you have should be starting this week. Additionally, Cody Johnson may see more goalline use.

With Sam Bradford still out, it should be another productive week for Demarco Murray against Tulsa.

The Missouri offense that looked so good against Illinois and so bad for most of the game against Bowling Green, should once again be running smoothly against a lower division foe; Furman. Blaine Gabbert and Derrick Washington are good for big weeks. Danario Alexander is shaping up to be the team’s primary receiver, averaging 94 ypg in two games not as easy as the matchup with Furman figures to be.

With Kendall Hunter likely out, and given how bad the Rice secondary is, this should be a huge week for both Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant.

Kansas takes on an ACC opponent, but remember that Duke lost to a FCS opponent in the opening week. Dezmon Briscoe should have another big week, along with QB Todd Reesing.

Nebraska players, on the other hand, should all be in for relatively low-performing weeks against one of the perennial top five-to-ten defensive units in the nation, Virginia Tech.
