Big 12: Week 11

The story of week 10 was Jordan Shipley‘s school record-setting performance against UCF.273 yards receiving and an 88 yard touchdown to go with it. Colt McCoy threw for a monstrous 470 yards, and the Longhorn offense looks ready to tear through the remaining competition up until a likely Big 12 Championship appearance.

Todd Reesing struggled again as the Kansas Jayhawks lost to Kansas State. Wildcats RB Daniel Thomas picked up 185 yards on the ground and found the end zone once.

Colorado won a wild 35-34 contest over Texas A&M, scoring the winning TD with 1:46 to play. Rodney Stewart ran for 118 yards and 2 TDs for the Buffs, who also got good production out of WR Markques Simas (135 yards). The Aggies’ Ryan Tannehill had 100 yards receiving, but Jerrod Johnson‘s lone interception was a costly one that effectively ended the game with 90 seconds remaining.

Baylor and Missouri played an odd shootout, with the two teams combining for 895 yards passing to just 48 yards rushing (although, that includes -76 yards in sacks). Danario Alexander hauled in 214 yards receiving, scoring once, and Jared Perry added 145 yards through the air. Blaine Gabbert threw for 468 yards and 2 scores, but it was not enough to match Nick Florence‘s 427 yards and 3 scores, with a fourth coming on a short run. I’d call this a fluke week, and wouldn’t rush to pick up Bears players with Texas being this week’s game.

Despite a mediocre performance from Zac Robinson, Keith Toston ground up the Iowa State Cyclones by himself, rushing for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns in an easy route.

Finally, Oklahoma and Nebraska played an ugly 10-3 game in which Sooners’ QB Landry Jones offset 245 yards passing by throwing 5 INTs. Roy Helu ran for 138 yards to be really the only fantasy player of any value in this game. While both offenses have struggled throughout the season, neither was helped by the fact that both units field top ten defenses.

Week 11 Preview

Facing Baylor, Texas should find the end zone early and often. Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley as always are good starts, and it looks like Cody Johnson is getting a lot of playing time in red zone situations.

Oklahoma might rebound on offense against Texas A&M — as well as they recruit, you’d think it would have to happen sometime (unless they’ve got a real QB problem brewing for 2010). I am again looking at Jones and Demarco Murray as players likely to put up the best numbers for OU. The Aggies on the other hand might be befuddled by an OU defense that has been stingy enough to keep this team afloat despite the offensive turmoil.

The rest of the conference’s offense is likely to come in the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech game. Detron Lewis and, apparently, Baron Batch look to be the focuses of the Red Raider offense, whoever gets the start at QB this week. Oklahoma State will likely rely on a heavy dose of Keith Toston while the passing game is still struggling to find a receiver to pick up the slack left from Dez Bryant’s departure… a strategy which has worked well for them in the past month when not facing the nation’s #1 run defense (although Hubert Anyiam has clearly established himself as the top target).
