Big East + Indy Week 1 Review

By Jason Collette | September 2, 2008

shun-white Big East + Indy Week 1 ReviewIt was not a pretty week for the Big East in the standings nor in fantasy as there were many disappointments all around. The best performance from this group came from a rather surprising source.

The Good:

Shun White - RB, Navy.  There are not enough superlatives to describe this performance. It is only week one and we might have the highest RB output for the entire season.  19 carries for 348 yards and three touchdowns - and that was with Townson playing eight in the box and Special K missing the game due to a leg injury.

Donald Brown - RB, UCONN. Yawn - he ran for 202 yards less than White but topped his touchdown total by one. Enjoy UCONN production now because their schedule gets very tough toward the end. Brown saved the Huskies since Tyler Lorenzen was awful.

Dustin Grutza - QB, Cincy. Grutza does not typically find his name in the good column, but he tore up the Colonels breaking my brother-in-law’s heart. Grutza threw for 296 and three scores while chipping in 33 yards and a rushing touchdown. Mauk was golden in this offense last year but Grutza lacks Mauk’s moxy and accuracy.

Dominic Goodman and Marcus Gilyard - WRs, Cincy. These two were the biggest beneficiaries of Grutza’s efforts as they both went for more than 100 yards and each hauled in two touchdowns. Goodman was the more productive with 10 receptions for 144 yards.

Pat White - QB, WV. White typically produces with his legs but his arm was golden this weekend as he threw for 208 yards and five touchdowns while chipping in 63 yards on the ground.

Alric Arnett and Jock Sanders- WRs, WV. Someone has to step up and replace Darius Reynaud and Arnett won the job in week one with 70 yards receiving and two touchdowns.  Sanders chipped in with 62 yards and two touchdowns as well.

Mike Ford - RB, USF. 61 yards and two touchdowns isn’t the important thing here - the 15 touches are. For a guy who has not been officially named the starter, he led the team in carries in the game against the Skyhawks and is the most talented runner on the team.

The Bad:

Mike Teel - QB, Rutgers. 263 yards, 51% completion rate, and two interceptions. You think he misses his Rice security blanket?

LeSean McCoy - RB, Pitt. 116 yards and a touchdown is a decent day….against a BCS team. Against Bowling Green when you’re playing at home, not so good.

The Ugly:

Anything Louisville. Hunter Cantwell went 20 for 43 for 152 yards and three picks. He spent more time on his back than Jenna Jameson.  53 yards rushing as a team, five turnovers, and their only points came on a safety. Kragthorpe spent Labor Day working on his resume.
