Big Ten Bookend: Illini earn some R-E-S-P-E-C-T

November 4th, 2009 by Mike Ware

Illini_logoHow sweet is the Juice?  After I had written him and the rest of the Illinois team off, they play one of their best games in years.  Juice Williams was amazing.  After the Illini shut down the Michigan offense with a goal line stance for the ages, Juice leads the Illini 99 yards to score.  On the day Juice had 123 yards passing and a TD– but that wasn’t enough.  He also had 97 yards rushing and another TD.  The Illini went nuts on the Wolverines racking up 500 total yards on offense on the day– Illini players lit up fantasy scoreboards everywhere.  Mikel LeShoure had 150 yards rushing, a TD and 14 receiving.  Jason Ford rushed for 128 yards and a TD.  Arrelious Benn also had a TD.  Ron Zook had to enjoy this one since they embarrassed the Wolverines.  Tate Forcier had 257 yards passing and 24 rushing.  Carlos Brown ran for 94 yards and a TD.  Plus Roy Roundtree had 92 yards receiving on the day.  That is it for highlights on the Michigan side.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten we see Indiana WR Damarlo Belcher had 89 yards receiving and a TD for the week.  Iowa RB Brandon Wegher ran for 118 yards and 3 TD’s, not bad for the freshman.  And Mr. PSU Daryll Clark had a good game with 274 yards passing and a TD. Then he added 16 yards rushing and another TD.  PSU RB Evan Royster rushed for 118 and a TD in the Nittany Lions win.  And PSU WR Derek Moye had 123 yards and a TD.

Iowa again slacked off for 3 quarters only to come charging back and win to keep the perfect season alive.  Typically I would go on and on about Ricky Stanzi’s great comeback, but after throwing 5 interceptions it is hard to be happy with his 337 yard game (plus 2 TD’s).

Looking ahead this week we have a huge game this week in Happy Valley.  Ohio State at 7-2 will play Penn State at 8-1.  These two shared the Big Ten crown last year.  It should be a great game.

Other games to watch include Purdue at Michigan; both teams coming off dismal performances will look to get back on track this week.  Wisconsin travels to Indiana this week and Illinois will look to keep their momentum rolling at Minnesota this week.

Predictions for Week 10:

Illinois 27 – Minnesota 20

Northwestern 31 – Iowa 13 (you are reading that correctly, NU over Iowa)

Michigan State 38 – Western Michigan 17

Purdue 30 – Michigan 10

Wisconsin 24 – Indiana 7

Penn State 44 – Ohio State 28
