BLITZindex Defense Rankings for Week 6: Load up on MTSU offense

October 5th, 2009 by Vince Mullins

The Fantasy College Blitz BLITZindex ranks all 120 college football defenses based on equal weighting of three efficiency stats – yards per play allowed (YPP), points per game allowed (PPG) and yards per point allowed (YPPt). The goal is to help fantasy college football owners select the best lineups possible, not to identify the best fantasy defenses.

We are almost at the halfway mark of the fantasy season and some trends are just too obvious to ignore. Like the Gators, Trojans and Nittany Lions again possess the supreme defensive units in college football, and also that South Florida, Nebraska and Cincinnati are in for something special if they can maintain their ability to stifle opponents with the ball. On the other hand, green flags should go wild anytime you see anyone on your roster facing Rice, Western Kentucky or Miami (OH). And Maryland, Troy and Georgia are uncharacteristically bad this season.

To shake things up a bit, I want to focus this week on finding the potential free agent pickups or super sleepers for your lineup. And if I have yet to impress upon you the opportunity available this season with Middle Tennessee, i fear this is the last chance for me to do so to save or enhance your season.

After the jump, the 1-120 rankings with free agent ideas for Week 6 and beyond…BlitzIndex_100309_alphabetical

Re: the Blue Raiders, Middle Tennessee opens this week’s action on TUESDAY night at Troy after a bye week, and QB Dwight Dasher has been solid against mostly non-conference comps – and by solid I mean Top Ten overall scoring in a variety of formats. MT has no more bye weeks and gets to pick off the Sun Belt Conference defenses now. Without RB Philip Tanner (Knee) this has been Dasher’s offense – fantasy-wise his seven TD passes have each gone to different WRs so good luck picking up the value there. K Alan Gendreau looks like the best way to help your team given his unknown status (cheap FAAB) and the remaining schedule (with current BLITZindex ranking): at Troy (109), vs. Miss. St (79), Western Kentucky (119), at FAU (117), FIU (114), ULL (100), Arkansas State (median 60), at ULM (93).

Other interesting plays:

North Texas at ULL (#100) – QB Riley Dodge returns, and WR Jamaal Jackson had 11 recs last game.

Memphis at UTEP (#101) – K Matt Reagan and less likely young QB Tyler Bass (nice dual threat)

Wyoming hosts New Mexico (#110 and Daniel’s worst team in the country vote) – highly touted QB Austyn Carta-Samuels owns this team for the next four years and is off to a great start (KEEPER ALERT), as is freshman RB Alvester Alexander who just did three end zone dances at FAU. Remember new coach Dave Christensen ran the Mizzou offense and these are his recruits.

Central Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan (#111) – all the MAC looks like matadors (except maybe CMU at #26) but do you remember WR Bryan Anderson? He was a permastarter the last couple years and has started quietly. Perhaps his first TD at Buffalo is his warning shot to owners everywhere? Grab him now.
