Big 12 Bookends

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It was an efficient victory for the Texas Longhorns over Baylor, who scored 47 points on just 411 yards. Jordan Shipley was held to 46 yards receiving but scored twice, and leading rusher Cody Johnson also scored twice on 109 yards. As expected, Baylor’s offense was an exercise in futility.

Missouri exploded against Kansas State, with Blane Gabbert throwing for 298 yards and 3 TD passes. Danario Alexander caught 200 of those yards and all 3 scores.

Colorado’s losing waves continued, in a 17-10 setback against Iowa State. Tyler Hansen threw for 258 yards and a TD, but also threw an interception. Alexander Robinson led the Cyclones with 138 yards rushing and scored on a 20 yard reception. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12: Week 11

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Jordan Shipley3

Texas WR Jordan Shipley (thanks Icon SMI)

The story of week 10 was Jordan Shipley‘s school record-setting performance against UCF.273 yards receiving and an 88 yard touchdown to go with it. Colt McCoy threw for a monstrous 470 yards, and the Longhorn offense looks ready to tear through the remaining competition up until a likely Big 12 Championship appearance.

Todd Reesing struggled again as the Kansas Jayhawks lost to Kansas State. Wildcats RB Daniel Thomas picked up 185 yards on the ground and found the end zone once.

Colorado won a wild 35-34 contest over Texas A&M, scoring the winning TD with 1:46 to play. Rodney Stewart ran for 118 yards and 2 TDs for the Buffs, who also got good production out of WR Markques Simas (135 yards). The Aggies’ Ryan Tannehill had 100 yards receiving, but Jerrod Johnson‘s lone interception was a costly one that effectively ended the game with 90 seconds remaining. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Bookend

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

We expected Oklahoma State’s offense to struggle, but the Texas defense was so dominant – scoring two touchdowns of their own – that the offense hardly saw the field. If your league plays defenses, the Longhorns were a great start.

Texas Tech and Kansas figured to throw for 400 yards apiece, but ended up passing for about that much total. The surprise offensive player of the game was Baron Batch, who not only eclipsed the 100 yard mark but ran it in four times for TDs!

Of the three touchdowns scored in the Nebraska-Baylor game, one was off an interception and another blocked a punt. Nobody had a good offensive game here either. At least the Huskers won the turnover battle this week. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Bookends: And Then There Were Two…

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Colt McCoyMost Big 12 games were pretty one-sided in week 8 and now there are only two teams remaining in the Top 25.

Will Oklahoma State be the next to fall?

Texas jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead to easily defeat Missouri on the road. The Texas defense has solidified into one of the top units in the nation and should suppress fantasy output for any players they face. Colt McCoy (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) completed 84% of his passes including 3 TD tosses, Jordan Shipley caught 2 TDs to go with 108 yards receiving, and Fozzy Whittaker has become the team’s number one back, chipping in a modest 54 total yards but finding the end zone once. Big 12 Bookend: Alas Bradford, I hardly knew thee…

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Demarco Murray3Though I had predicted the Red River Shootout to be a low-to-mid scoring affair, this was a far uglier game than I expected. Eight total turnovers (won 5-3 by the Horns) and over 200 yards in penalties turned this into an monstrous affair that really dragged on. Sam Bradford was knocked out early and may be lost for the season. His replacement, Landry Jones, put up a decent number of total yards but had two costly picks late in the game. Colt McCoy fared worse, throwing a pick in the red zone and twice fumbling in Sooner territory, the second time after a long run to get inside the 10 yard line. Demarco Murray (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) had a good day receiving, but the Sooners were held to negative rushing totals. Fozzy Whittaker picked up a similar amount of yardage, although his route-running was spotty at times. Overall this was a game dominated by the defenses. Read the rest of this entry →
