Big 12 Roundup: BB and AB (Before and After Beebe)

Iowa St. now has someone fantasy football relevant...WR Darius Reynolds (Icon SMI)

Week 3 Review

In our Friday night game, Iowa State won a back-and-forth contest against Connecticut – a sloppy affair in which each team turned the ball over three times. WR Darius Reynolds was the diamond in this rough game for fantasy stats – 128 yards and 2 TDs.

Kansas opened Saturday’s games by getting demolished by Georgia Tech, 66-24. The Jayhawks allowed over 600 yards rushing and simply could not keep this game competitive in the third quarter. You were best off not playing any KU players last week. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Roundup: Week 2, Week 3 and Praying there’s a Week 4

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Looking Back at Week 2

Oklahoma State showed that their bowl win over Arizona was no accident, dominating their future Pac-16 East counterparts in a 37-14 victory. The Cowboys’ offense totaled 594 yards.  Notably, Joseph Randle gained 118 yards while scoring twice. Justin Blackmon went off for 128 yards on 12 receptions and also found the end zone twice. Brandon Weeden threw for 397 yards and 2 TDs, including a 79% completion percentage and just 1 interception in 53 attempts. Kicker Quinn Sharp did miss on both a PAT and a field goal, including a miss from 48 yards in the final seconds with the score knotted at 30.

Missouri lost to Arizona State in a game what wound up being closer and higher-scoring than I had expected. The Tigers will likely be unhappy about 2 missed FG in a game that ultimately went to OT.
QB James Franklin threw for 319 yards and 2 TDs, plus 59 yards and a TD rushing. Marcus Lucas had the most yards receiving (87) and TJ Moe the most receptions (6) as this offense made an effort to spread the ball around. RB Henry Josey had a productive night with 94 yards rushing and 51 yards receiving. Read the rest of this entry →

Big 12 Roundup – Or is it the Big 9?

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Baylor kicked off the weekend for the conference in style, with Robert Griffin III throwing for 359 yards and 5 TDs, topped off with 33 yards rushing and 15 yards receiving. His main target was Kendall Wright, who hauled in 189 yards and 2 TDs in addition to throwing for 55 yards and 1 TD. Yes, just when TCU appeared to stop Griffin-to-Wright on Baylor’s final drive, on a key third down Wright completed a 15 yard pass to Griffin. Rounding off the offensive explosion, Terrance Ganaway ran for 120 yards and 1 TD while Terrance Williams caught 6 passes for 126 yards and 2 TDs.

Missouri looked even worse than I expected against the Miami Redhawks, and I had low expectations going in. With 129 yards passing, 1 TD, 66 yards rushing, and another TD on the ground, QB James Franklin might have been worth starting – maybe – depending on how your league rewards rushing yards vs passing yards. Nobody else on this team was worth looking at, not a good sign in an opening game against a MAC school.

This week for Missouri: After bogging down against Miami (OH), I can’t see the Tigers getting much done on the road against a ranked Arizona State team that is among the most experienced in the country. Better look for other options if you’re holding Tiger players on your roster. Read the rest of this entry →

2011 Big 12 Preview: Kansas Schools + Iowa St.

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Quickly, some updates regarding previously covered schools:

BAYLOR has suspended WR Josh Gordon indefinitely, and he will almost surely miss at least the Bears’ season opener against TCU. Gordon was the Bears’ #2 receiver in 2010 and will be missed while he is out.

TEXAS learned that speedy WR Marquise Goodwin will redshirt during the 2011 season to focus on qualifying for the Olympics in track. The receiving corps will be further hurt by the loss of Malcolm Williams, the team’s only senior receiver, as he has decided to end his football career to focus on family issues. Only more reasons to be bearish on the Longhorn offense this season.

Onto the previews…

Kansas State
The Wildcats will be losing their QB Carson Coffman and back-to-back 1000-yard rusher Daniel Thomas. Reliable WR Audrey Quarles is also gone, and the line will be breaking in three new starters, leaving the offense with holes to fill at every position. Read the rest of this entry →

2011 Big 12 Preview: The Texas Schools

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

QB Robert Griffin looks to take Baylor to the top of the Big 12 (Icon SMI)

Baylor Bears:

In 2010, Baylor won 7 games to earn the school’s first bowl berth since 1994. Robert Griffin III returned from an injury in 2009 to account for 4300 yards of total offense along with 30 TDs. The backfield had a strong 1-2 punch as Jay Finley set a school record for rushing yards with 1,218. WRs Kendall Wright and Josh Gordon provided consistent receiving options for a surprisingly good Bears offense.

In 2011, most of that offense returns, with one important loss: Finley. Junior Jarred Salubi will be the likely replacement, and it’s difficult to imagine the Bears’ backfield not suffering at least some decline as Finley was the school’s top rusher in its history. Read the rest of this entry →
