2011 SEC Fantasy QBs

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

QB Tyler Wilson looks to step in as the new gunslinger at Arkansas (Icon SMI)

It’s a little strange to see a conference so historically run-heavy emerge with multiple viable fantasy QBs in nearly all formats, but that’s where we stand now. The unleashing of Bobby Petrino and Gus Malzahn’s on the SEC (and, let’s be honest, Cam Newton destroying everything) served as a nice reminder that hey, the guy under center not only doesn’t have to be under center, but he can also run or pass more than 25 times a game. This season, with the departure of Newton and Ryan Mallett, it easily looks like there’s a potential QB void in the SEC – again. That’s not the case.

First Tier – Draftable and Startable

1. Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

Wilson saw limited action last year (mostly when Mallett was injured) and served as a capable replacement, going toe-to-toe against the Auburn juggernaut. Granted, he didn’t exactly keep that game close, but it’s tough to notch a win when your defense looks like fresh baby food. With the emergence of Knile Davis and the return of nearly everyone who caught a pass among the receiver corps, Wilson has plenty of quality targets. He’s as plug-and-play as it gets for Petrino, and should approximate Mallett’s performance. Read the rest of this entry →

My 2011 Value QB Strategy Worksheet

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Denard Robinson of Michigan went undrafted last season and had many outstanding games - so why draft any QB high? (Icon SMI)

It should be well known by our seventh year of publishing, the Fantasy College Blitz position on drafting QBs – but if not, here it is loud and clear again:

In a 1-QB start league, if you can’t get a top 3 QB, wait and pick your QB1 when everyone else is going after QB2s.

Even if you are just playing with the AQ 65-team version of fantasy college football, your twelve owner fantasy league can pick from five deep of starters every week – it is the old demand-supply equation. So why spend valuable early round picks on a over-supplied position? Remember, NO ONE drafted Michigan’s Denard Robinson nor UCF’s Jeff Godfrey in 2010 and they bordered on stardom for the entire season.

My main criteria: unquestioned starter, strong November performance from last season, respected coaching staff and a favorable schedule. To that end, here are some names I like when prepping my pre-fall camp preview of the nation’s college football QBs. You can likely grab them in the eighth round or later. (Two drafts to look at are the Athlon Sports Mock #1 and the almost finished NCAA Project Dynasty League [K = Keeper, R = Recruit])

2011 MWC Fantasy QBs

Monday, July 18th, 2011

QB Kellen Moore and Boise State look primed for a spotless season - what does that mean for your fantasy draft? (Icon SMI)

With the one-year alignment of Boise State and TCU in the Mountain West Conference, college football fans get to see the top two BCS Busters of the past decade battle it out for underdog supremacy.

Only Boise State Heisman Trophy contender QB Kellen Moore stands alone as a sure fire fantasy first rounder – or does he? Here’s a look at the top signal callers in the MWC.

1.  Kellen Moore, Boise State – The Broncos score an insane amount of points each year, no reason to think that will chance this season despite the move up in competition from the WAC to the MWC. Sure the top 2 pass catchers depart, but Boise has become a fantasy factory. The one knock on Moore would be the offense being TOO potent, i.e. just as likely to have an RB or 2 rush for 6 scores as they are to have Moore pass for 400+ on any given week.

Early Look at Top 2011 QBs

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Will QB Case Keenum reclaim his #1 Fantasy QB status?

Every year, big name Quarterbacks turn pro, graduate or transfer.  And every year, this leaves you wondering who’s going to be the next fantasy stud.   But this year is different, as arguably the top 7 Quarterbacks in the fantasy nation are back for more in 2011.  This is quite impressive considering one returns from a season-ending injury and one comes back to school when he might have been the #1 pick in the NFL Draft.  Here are the preliminary Top 25 QB’s to target for 2011.

1. Case Keenum (pictured right, courtesy of Icon SMI), Houston

2. Landry Jones, Oklahoma

3. Denard Robinson, Michigan

4. Dominique Davis, East Carolina

5. Bryant Moniz, Hawaii Read the rest of this entry →

Senior Bowl 2011 Road Trip: North Wednesday Practice Wrap

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

QB Jake Locker - mobility skills, athletic skills, but does he have the NFL arm? (Icon SMI)

Your FCB Road Warriors ended up arriving to the North Practice a bit late (too much BBQ – ed.), so I was unable to see the individual drills, but I was able to catch the good stuff: 7 v 7 and 11 v 11 drills.

came into the practice with an idea of some things to watch for, mainly hitches and flaws that some prominent NFL Draft wannabes have carried over from their college careers into this bright spotlight of a casting call stage.

Notes by position after the jump. Read the rest of this entry →
