Fantasy College Football Invitational Draft: What Would Drew Do?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

The grand poobah of expert leagues kicked off Sunday Night – the live draft of the Fantasy College Football Invitational.  This year, we combined our longest standing league and its name with a several other expert leagues in the industry to form the grand-daddy league. A whopping 20 owners comprised the field  with each team selecting 20 players for a total of 400 players. Surprisingly, the draft moved swiftly and we were done in a little over 3 hours.

The starting lineup for the league consists of:

  • 2 QB
  • 2 RB
  • 2 WR
  • 1 TE
  • 1 Flex (RB, WR, TE)
  • 1 Defense
  • 1 Kicker

My Fantasy College Blitz entry had the 20th pick in the draft (scroll WAY to the right), the lowest I have ever drafted in any league in any sport. My strategy going in was to get solid low risk running backs and wide receivers in the first 4 rounds.  After that, I would load up on high upside guys at those two positions the rest of the way.

If a top quarter back didn’t fall to me at picks 20/21, I knew that by the time my next picks came up at 60/61, at least 15-20 QBs would be off the board.  Therefore, I planned looking for value QBs later in the draft if that happened. The TE position is not very exciting so I planned on taking a few sleepers late. The defensive scoring is not strong enough to use anything more than a late pick and the same goes for kickers.

The Cowboys offense is going to put up a ton of points and Hunter is as a lock for Top 10 RB if he can stay healthy. Quickly adapting to his dual-purpose role.

CFFI’s All-FBS Expert Mock Draft – my All-Earth roster

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

One would think that after fifteen years of fantasy college football drafting that I would learn not to get excited about one of my drafts – such ambivalence has no place for me when reviewing my work from the #1 spot in Monday night’s College Fantasy Football Insider’s All-120 Expert Mock Draft.

Daniel Thomas takes to the air on a touchdown run.

Daniel Thomas learned quickly how to score TDs as RB. This as one of four against TAMU (Icon SMI)

Yes, I know there were only 11 owners drafting, making each a possible All-American squad. I just think mine is All-Earth. Maybe even add in Mars as it travels very closely to Earth this month.

I am sure that everyone thinks their team is best – after all, we aren’t playing out the season to prove it. Regardless, a look at the draft not only is instructive for whom was taken but also for who was not selected, suggesting big time value opportunities for your draft.

Only 30 days to kickoff, you know…time to load up with Cougars and Tigers, oh my!

After the jump, a round by round mind-stream of my draft, then I reinforce the FCB Cardinal Rule of Drafting QBs…

About fifteen minutes in I get in a shot at the Tennesse Vols players who are charged with armed robbery, but at the expense of the CBS IT staff. With less turnover than Jay Cutler, I give you BLITZradio!

CFB Expert League: Week 6 Report

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Game 1 Recap: Sports Overload (5-1) def. FCB (2-4) 120.66 to 115.60

Ryan Williams2Best Player:  The Overload express was led by Fantasy stud Case Keenum yet again.  The Houston QB continues to light up scoreboards and leading all of his teams to victory.  FCB kept it very close thanks to Ryan Williams (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI), who after beginning the season in a likely timeshare with David Wilson has emerged as a darkhorse Heisman finalist.

Disappointing Player:  Simply put, Brandon LaFell is not a fantasy WR.  He may have all the tools to be a solid receiver at the next level, however with a weak quarterback, against the nation’s top defense, he should not have been in the lineup.  FCB would have won this week if not for the porous performance of the Georgia Tech defense, which saw FSU march up and down the field at will.  A better defensive effort at FC B escapes with the win. CFB Expert League Report Week 3

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

EricDecker-1Game 1 Recap: CBS Sports (3-0) def. Fantasy College Blitz (2-1) 96.28-85.42

Best Player: The keys to this game were Eric Decker (pictured left, thanks Icon SMI) and McKay Jacobson.  The two wide receivers each performed up to their capabilities; albeit in losing efforts for their own teams in must win home games.  Jacobson has become a very solid option for Max Hall at BYU, while Decker continues to dominate opposing secondaries.

Disappointing Player: Tate Forcier laid an egg for FCB in week three and it coming against Eastern Michigan is very disappointing.  DeAndre Brown continues to be a huge let down for CBS and that performance came in a game in which Southern Miss put up 37 points in a win against Virginia.

Who to Watch for Week 4: The key for CBS going forward may be the health of Decker, who injured himself in the last drive against California.  Losing him would be a big blow to a 3-0 team.  For FCB, the injury to Michael Floyd is crushing.  He was enjoying a breakout 2009 and was dominant on the field.  Being lost for the year is a huge void in the WR spot for FCB.  Read the rest of this entry →
