Kellen Moore’s last minute drive on Monday night not only toppled the Virginia Tech Hokies, it turned the race for the 2010 Heisman Trophy upside down as well.

The Boise State quarterback’s come-from-behind heroics catapulted him into first place in the latest edition of the Heismanpundit.com Heisman Poll released on Wednesday (Sept. 8).  Moore tallied 31 total points and received 8 first-place votes from the 13-member panel of Heisman voters, improving upon his third-place standing in the preseason edition of the poll.  The junior threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns against Virginia Tech, moving his career record as a starting quarterback to 27-1.

Alabama’s Mark Ingram starts the 2010 season right where he left off in 2009–on top of the Heismanpundit.com Heisman Poll.

The junior incumbent Heisman winner grabbed 6 first-place votes and totaled 26 points to take the top spot in this year’s preseason edition of the survey.  He holds a solid lead over Ohio State junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who received 2 first place votes and 18 points overall.
Boise State junior quarterback Kellen Moore was third with 12 points (2 first-place votes), while Oregon State junior running back Jacquizz Rodgers (6 points, 2 first-place votes) was fourth.  Houston senior quarterback Case Keenum and Arkansas junior quarterback Ryan Mallett tied for fifth (4 points).
Also garnering support was Virginia Tech sophomore running back Ryan Williams (3 points), Pitt sophomore running back Dion Lewis (2 points), plus Washington senior quarterback Jake Locker, Wisconsin junior running back John Clay and Notre Dame junior wide receiver Michael Floyd (1 point each).

Coffee is for closers: Heisman should go to Gerhart

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Venti: Stanford RB Toby Gerhart

Flat out stud. Durable and clutch. Other than the 24-17 loss to Wake Forest in Week 2 where he inexplicably had 6 second half carries, “Touchdown Toby” has averaged 27-149-2.3 TD per game. And other than the Wake game he has been the model of consistency, scoring in every game and never carrying less than 20 yards or gaining less than 100 yards.

And counter-intuitively, he’s gotten better as the season has worn on, just as other backs are wearing down. Mr. November has run for 742 yards and 13 scores against while facing 4 bowl teams, including 223 and 3 against Rose Bowl bound Oregon and flat out embarrassed the USC Defense in their own house to the tune of 178 and 3TD and was the key in Stanford’s ability to hold on the ball for nearly 19 minutes in the second half.

Grande: Florida’s Tim Tebow

Timmy might not have the numbers of his youth, but no single player has meant more to his school this season. Each and every week Tebow puts the Gators on his back and does not allow them to lose, or at least gets them in a spot to take advantage of a few…ahem…questionable calls by those wonderful SEC officials.

Sure the raw numbers aren’t great. But if I’m building a team, I want Gerhart in the backfield and TD Timmy under center. Maybe it is not the perfect marriage of system and talent, but Tebow may be the greatest college football player in history. Certainly the Heisman is not a lifetime award, dont get me wrong, but the point is Tebow can produce eye popping numbers, we’ve all seen that trick. This year is all he is doing is winning each and every time he takes his team onto the field. Read the rest of this entry →

Alabama running back Mark Ingram is the new leader in the latest edition of the HeismanPundit.com Heisman Poll released on Tuesday (Oct. 20).
The sophomore from Flint, Mich., surged into the top spot following his 246-yard rushing performance against South Carolina.  The weekly survey of 13 Heisman voters from around the country gave Ingram 48 points and four first-place votes as he supplanted Florida’s Tim Tebow (45 points, six first-place votes), the poll leader for the first eight weeks of the season.  If Ingram’s lead holds, he’ll become the first Alabama player–and third-consecutive sophomore–to win the Heisman.
“Mark Ingram has emerged as the leader in my opinion because of he’s played so well, especially in the last three games,” said one voter.  “The Heisman goes to the most outstanding player and at this point I don’t see anyone who’s more outstanding. Great performances against good opponents impress me most, and he’s had big games against Virginia Tech, Mississippi and South Carolina.”

Florida’s Tim Tebow held on to a comfortable lead in the latest edition of the HeismanPundit.com Heisman Poll released on Tuesday (Oct.13).

The panel of 13 Heisman voters from around the country gave the Gator quarterback six first-place votes and 50 total points after he returned from a concussion to lead his top-ranked team to a 13-3 victory over then-No. 4 LSU last Saturday. It is the seventh-straight week that Tebow has topped the weekly poll.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy hung on to second place with 35 points and two first-place votes, barely edging out Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who totaled 34 points and two first-place votes.
Despite Tebow’s steady mastery of the weekly survey, the race appears wide open, with voters showing interest in several new candidates.  A season-high 14 players appeared in this week’s balloting.  Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamkong Suh made the biggest splash, garnering two first-place votes to debut in sixth place.
“If the award is for the most outstanding player in college football, you have to be awed by how dominating Suh has been this season,” said one voter.  “Other guys who become the default frontrunners due to their reps linger near the top and will be tough to beat in the end, but I’m going with Suh at this point. He’s made the Huskers a big deal again and he’s doing some things nobody at his position does.”
