Impact freshmen for 2010 fantasy college football

Monday, July 5th, 2010

QB Pete Thomas - Colorado State:  Probably the best of the incoming….and he will start.   Young team returning, but, many saw playing time due to injury.   Big time talent for the program, and for the MWC.

Many will push QB Jake Heaps of BYU….but he is a Mormon who probably will go on mission for the next 2 years…so I do not see much playing time for him in 2010. Stick with transfer Riley Nelson (Utah State 2008) if you must go with a BYU QB this season.
RB Roderick Smith – Ohio State:  Big back who could push for playing time.  Tressel never afraid to play true frosh, as long as they stay eligible (see Jamaal Berry)

RB Aaron Spikes – UL Lafayette:   They like to run, and, they have some issues at RB.  Another program not afraid to play true frosh….remember Tyrell Fenroy (Four 1k run years).

RB Ethan Grant – TCU:  A good team that could use some help at RB, and a big recruit at the MWC level

WR Mike Davis - Texas:  Need to replace Jordan Shipley and Dan Buckner….and this may be the best of the incoming frosh WR for the Horns

WR Kyle Prater - USC:  They signed a lot of WRs this yr….and Prater is a big target who could impact immediately,,,even moreso than Robert Woods….another top USC WR recruit

WR James Green – Toledo:  Should start from day one….a big WR from Florida who could have an immediate impact in the MAC

WR Ross Apo – BYU:  Seems to be always a true frosh stepping up at WR at the Y….and Apo is a big WR for a program that usually has smallish WRs

WR Marcus Lucas – Missouri:  Has the size and speed to make an immediate impact, and Mizzou with QB Blaine Gabbert throws that football around.

Feast or Famine: Top 5 Breakout Players of 2009

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Entering the 2009 season, every College Fantasy Football owner knew the names Keenum, Bryant, Gresham, Potts, Tebow, Bradford, and many more.  What wins championships however is how the owners do at managing their waiver wire, finding the next superstar and riding the hot hand.  While none of the below players are their positions top scorer, each has provided their owners with outstanding production and has hopefully led them to the top of the standings.

Aztec QB Ryan Lindley has some huge games under first-year coach Brady Hoke (Icon SMI)

Ryan Lindley, QB, San Diego State - Not many fantasy owners even knew Lindley’s name prior to the 2009 season and for those owners that now have him on their team, they are happy.  Lindley has led the Aztecs to a respectable 3-4 record and is tied for third in the nation with 17 touchdown passes.  Although he does have 10 interceptions, he ranked in the top 20 in yards per game with 270.  Not bad for a waiver wire addition who can start for many teams.

DeMaundray Woolridge, RB, Idaho - Not only is Idaho having their best team season in many years (6-2), Woolridge has established himself as a touchdown machine.  Through 8 games, Woolridge is averaging 5.5 yards per rush and has scored 12 times.  The reality is that his yards per game average is only 67.9.  However, when you have a back scoring at least once a game, while playing on a winning team that is holding leads late, you have yourself a prime-time fantasy back.

Dion Lewis, RB, Pittsburgh - After LeSean McCoy and Larod Stephens-Howlings left Pittsburgh, not many experts knew what to expect from the Panthers ground game in 2009.  Lewis has been the savior for the 7-1 Panthers, who ranks second in the nation with 1,029 yards, ranks 7th with 11 TD’s, and is 6th in the nation with 128.6 yards per game.  The Panthers schedule has been favorable and playing in the defensive challenged Big East, Lewis should continue to put up staggering numbers as the Panthers fight for the conference crown.

Joe Montana’s Son a Huskie

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Much like other son’s of football QB legends, Nick Montana will have to fight hard to get out from under the shadow. The headline for this article, much like the other ones out there, don’t mention him by his name- they only refer to the son of Joe Montana.  That my friends, is a lot of pressure.

Some son’s have advanced past that pressure and succeeded in the NFL, such as the Manning brothers.   Or grinded out a career in the NFL such as Brian Griese.  Others have decided the weight of their father’s shoulder pads were a bit heavy, a la Jack Elway. However,  Nick Montana will have a chance to jump start the next chapter of Huskie football under new Head Coach Steve Sarkisian.  Many Washington faithful are hoping that Sarkisian brought some of that magic QB dust from the USC cupboards and will splash a heavy dose of it on Nick Montana.   This is finally Nick’s chance to be a star and create a name for himself.

From a fantasy standpoint, don’t expect worthwhile stats till his second year under center.  Those in dynasty leagues (hey Vince…hint hint for your draft in the NCAA Project), this is an interesting pick to stash away.

We believe Nick has made a very good decision for himself.  Imagine that…potential fame based on his own talent and not because he shares the same last name as that other Montana.

EA/Nike Elite 11 QB Football Camp notes from Orlando

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has emerged as the Florida epicenter of high school football’s best prospects, and on this frigid Sunday (frigid for us is 50) more than fifty of the Southeast’s best QBs of 2010 and 2011 competed in drills at the EA Sports / Nike Elite 11 Regional Football Camp. The final Elite 11 gathers the Top 11 QB scores from the regionals for a focused event that always showcases the best and brightest of future college football seasons.

Jason Roberts and I ate some Disney breakfast around 0745, went over some notes and some business and then on to the field. Weather was particularly nasty – rain dotted the morning session and my guess was a solid 20 mph wind and gusts to 30 and temps in the 40s – not ideal at all. Fifty yard streaks were blown 10+ yards off target. If anything, this shows which of the youngsters can take mental account of themselves and persevere. Remember, these are 16 and 17 year old kids who feel like their futures are at stake.

Clint Trickett (right, courtesy Jason Roberts), son of Florida State o-line coach Rick Tricett, came away with the yellow leader jersey (HT: Tour de France) after defeating everyone in an accuracy competition.

Brion Carnes of Bradenton Manatee is for real, and a nice kid to boot. He was actively seeking input from guys like Chris Leak (Florida) and John Brantley (Florida) and they were happy to provide it due to his personality. When the seniors-to-be split off for competition you could tell he really wanted to be in their group. Read the rest of this entry →

Your College Football Recruiting reading list

Friday, February 6th, 2009

The following are links to some articles highlighting the recruiting hordes from the major fantasy college football programs (pasted from my delicious feed).

Andre DuBose, newest Florida Gator

Rivals.com Football Recruiting – Top five impact freshmen

Here is the difference between college analysis and FANTASY college analysis (not that there is anything wrong with that) – Shavodrick Beaver (QB Tulsa) isn’t on the list but could be this season’s Robert Griffin (Baylor). I still like WR Marlon Brown (UGA) over Duron Carter (Ohio State, Cris’ son) just based on the offensive system alone.

wait, both Ole Miss and Mississippi State on the Top 25? My eyes are deceiving me, no?

Four teams could claim top recruiting class

LSU, Alabama, Ohio State and USC. The top recruits in LSU’s class include 6-foot-3 Rueben Randle of Bastrop, LA rated as the No. 1 wide receiver and QB Russell Shepard of Houston – Bloomberg.com: North American

Gators have small but impressive recruiting class

I saw DeBose and Jelani Jenkins at the Under Armour HS All-AMerican Game, I was very impressed by both. DeBose could be the freshman fantasy player of the year – St. Petersburg Times
