FCFI: Expert League Week 1 Report
September 11th, 2009 by Adam Mankuta
Game 1 Recap: Fantasy College Blitz (1-0) def. CFF Insider (0-1) 129.36 to 119.40
Best Player: The best player for the FCB group was clearly Michael Floyd (pictured left courtesy Icon SMI) of Notre Dame, who only caught 4 balls, but in doing so caught 3 touchdowns and racked up close to 190 yards. For CFF Insider it was Taylor Potts, the new signal caller for Texas Tech, who despite throwing three picks, accounted for 4 scores.
Disappointing Player: Arrelious Benn was overrated by some entering the season, however no one could have predicted an injury during week one, which almost crushed FCB’s chances. For CFF Insider the disappointment was Brooks Orbson, who could only muster two catches for Ball State against North Texas.
Who to Watch for Week Two: Kendall Hunter only got 9.80 points in week one against a tough Georgia defense. Watch him double that, possibly in the first half as Oklahoma State plays Houston Saturday. For CFF Insider watch out for Potts, who will go up against Rice. Rice allowed Joe Webb to look like Tim Tebow in week one, so expect another massive night for Potts and the Red Raiders.
Game 2 Recap: Athlon Sports (1-0) def. U-Sports (0-1) 140.32 to 118.62
Best Player: Athlon Sports was carried by Roy Helu Jr., the Nebraska back who scored three times in an easy win, while U-Sports hung tough thanks to MiQuale Lewis, who returned to form with over 100 yards and a score.
Disappointing Player: Athlon Sports could have expected more from Omar Clayton, who against Sacramento State only scored once, while U-Sports probably thought that Tebow would score more than twice against Charleston Southern.
Who to Watch for Week Two: Athlon should expect more of the same from Helu, who now goes up against Arkansas State. Despite dropping to 0-1, U-Sports should feel good about Tebow’s matchup against Troy. You know one of these first couple games Tebow is due for a 3 passing TD, 2 rush score game, and this seems like it.
Game 3 Recap: Rotowire (1-0) def. Rotoworld (0-1) 146.22 to 83.58
Best Player: Rotowire enjoyed the blowout thanks to Todd Reesing (pictured left courtesy Icon SMI) and Jahvid Best, who combined for six touchdowns and over 200 yards rushing, while Rotoworld’s best player was Detron Lewis, who quickly developed a solid rapport with new Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts.
Disappointing Player: Despite the blowout, Rotowire needs to be concerned about the lingering suspension of WR Dezmon Briscoe. Rotoworld better hope their SMU combo of Bo Levi Mitchell and Aldrick Robinson perform better than their disappointing openers.
Who to Watch for Week Two: The two SMU players who were highly touted are in the spotlight entering week two as SMU travels to take on UAB who just blew out Rice. If UAB does the same, expect SMU to throw out the running plays and let lose. Rotowire will be interested to see if Freddie Barnes, who caught 15 balls in the opener, will be able to put up similar numbers when the Falcons take on Missouri.
Game 4 Recap: Sportsoverload.com (1-0) def. Sporting News (0-1) 114.46 to 108.84
Best Player: Totally not a shock to look at the box score and see that the number one overall player in fantasy college football in many people’s opinions accounted for five scores Saturday, but that is just what Case Keenum (pictured right courtesy Icon SMI) did for Sportsoverload. The Sporting News made it a contest thanks to a massive performance by Jacquizz Rodgers, who scored three times.
Disappointing Player: Sportsoverload enjoyed the 100 yard effort from Vai Taua, however a fumble and the lack of Nevada’s offense performing in the red zone led Taua to have a disappointing first game, while the Sporting News was let down in a huge way by CMU WR Bryan Anderson, who only had 2 catches in a road loss to Arizona.
Who to Watch for Week Two: The Sporting News may be in for a long season considering Sam Bradford is out for a few weeks, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts the lineup. Sportsoverload on the other hand must be thrilled with the quick huddle, air it out offense that Cincinnati showed in its rout of Rutgers, as Marty Gilyard may be in for a huge season. And who does Cincy get in the second week? SE Missouri State.
Game 5 Recap: CBS Sports (1-0) def. Fanball (0-1) 109.46 to 104.52
Best Player: Not often is your teams best player a Tight End, but CBS’ in week one was Slate of Marshall who scored twice and got over 100 yards receiving. Fanball was helped by their all everything Dexter McCluster, who scored once on the ground and once through the air.
Disappointing Player: Much more was expected of Colin Kaepernick of Nevada, both through the air and on the ground. However, the Wolfpack laid a major egg in South Bend while Fanball was let down, not only on the field, but then off by Oregon’s Heisman candidate; LaGarrette Blount, who did nothing to help Oregon win. He then got himself suspended for the season for his disgusting actions.
Who to Watch for Week Two: It will be interesting to see who Fanball uses to replace Blount at RB, while a nice surprise at RB for CBS, Nick Grigsby, will see if he can build on a 100-yard, TD opener when Arizona takes on in-state rival cupcake Northern Arizona.
Game 6 Recap: College Football Geek (1-0) def. Mock Draft Central (0-1) 127.04 to 111.14
Best Player: Quite a nice first week for CFG was made possible in large part to the week’s best player, UAB QB Joe Webb, who scored 48 points all by himself thanks to 415 total yards and four touchdowns. MDC kept it close thanks to his receiving combo of Dez Bryant and Juan Nunez.
Disappointing Player: Brandon Minor was a huge bust for MDC in week one as he missed the game due to injuries. He is listed as probable for this week’s huge game against Notre Dame, but that does mean he will be successful. CFG, on the other hand, was surely expecting more than 49 rushing yards from Andre Anderson- especially against a suspect Tulsa defense.
Who to Watch for Week Two: My new favorite player in College Football is Joe Webb and it will be interesting to see if he can make it 2 monster performances in a row, especially against an SMU team not known to play much defense. For CFG, expect a huge game from Dez Bryant, who despite two scores against Georgia looked to be in check for much of the day. Against Houston, a 9 catch, 210 yard, 3 TD game is totally possible.
Game 7 Recap: Football Outsiders (1-0) def. Open Sports (0-1) 91.70 to 76.58
Best Player: It is not a good sign when both of these teams best players in the first week were their defenses. For Football Outsiders it was Tennessee, while for Open Sports it was USC.
Disappointing Player: Charles Scott was a huge letdown for Football Outsiders, who could have banked on that kind of an atmosphere at Washington, not to mention the solid game of Jordan Jefferson through the air. For Open Sports, just about everyone was a disappointment, however the one that stands out was DeMarco Murray, who did not even rush for 60 yards against BYU and tossed in a fumble for good measure.
Who to Watch for Week Two: Matt Grothe will be an interesting play this week as the “do everything” QB faces a Western Kentucky team that allowed five touchdown passes to Tennessee, while Golden Tate of Notre Dame will try and eat into some of the Michael Floyd production as the Irish take on Michigan.
