College Football Saturday Morning Breakfast Burrito: A new world
By Vince Mullins | September 20, 2008
This morning I give thanks that the world of college football remains unchanged. Winners and losers are determined on the field and the scoreboard reflects the better team. Performance is rewarded. Referees rarely get in the way of competition. Not every team gets a trophy for participation.
No government interference bails out an unprepared coach, no invisible hand helps a bad quarterback like Chris Crane guide his passes to his receivers, and just ask 2007 Notre Dame fans if there is any insurance that their team will always be competitive.
And don’t bring that “NCAA is Socialist” nor “The BCS is Evil” stuff to me - while you can certainly illustrate inefficiencies in the bureaucracy (ask Jeremy Bloom, Ben Mauk, etc.) you must appreciate that when LSU plays Auburn, or Florida goes to Tennessee, or when they play Bedlam or the Civil War or the Old Oaken Bucket that the only determinants that affect the outcome are the coaches and the kids in uniform.
I can’t say the same for the rest of America right now. OK, back to football.
INJURIES
Will Carroll shares the latest on big name injuries (Beanie Wells out again), then shows you the hit of the year.
POSITIONAL ANALYSIS
BlitzIndex: Exclusive Defense ratings begin this week - Auburn/LSU is a game between two top tens.
From the shotgun: Daniel Freer points you to the scoring orgy expected in the New Mexico State at UTEP game.
Power I: Drew Smith already gave you Donald Brown as the start of the week, but also suggests you sell high and trade him away.
Going Deep: Vince Mullins gives love to the Herd and breaks down your permastarters.
WEATHER/TV
Nasty rain sweeping thru the Lower Mississippi River Valley and the Pacific Northwest, here is that great link at Weather.com.
Great TV schedule for the day here - damned if the Boise at Oregon game isn’t on here.
ETC.
Throughout the day, follow me at Twitter especially during Florida at Tennessee. If you hadn’t heard, some of the writers here discuss possible mispricing of the college football market at Blue Horseshoe Loves blog. Hot picks and hot chicks - good combo. Comments are allowed.
