Expert League: Hatfield and McCoys

The big matchup coming into last weekend was Rotowire.com vs. FantasyCollegeBlitz.com. Not only was it a battle of former champions of the Fantasy College Football Invitational, it was a game pitting two of this years undefeated teams against each other. On the other end of the spectrum, there were two teams battling to avoid being one step closer to a title they don’t want. Unless, down was up and losing meant they were #1.
In the first scenario, FCB wasn’t able to bring the firepower to take down Rotowire. QB Tyler Graunke ended up needed medical attention as he thought he broke his thumb/wrist. This partially explains his poor performance, the rest of the excuse coming from a subpar offense. The bigger story was that RB Jahvid Best got something more than just the snot knocked out of him in the game against Maryland. That sick hit set a pretty high bar for crushing blow of the year. Without a decent showing from either of those guys made it virtually impossible to take down Jeff Erickson’s behemoth of a team. Last year, he rolled thru the league undefeated and is already 3-0 this season. A quick look at the schedule shows that Rotowire doesn’t have to face Athlon/PFS until the last week of the season. Could both teams still be undefeated by then??? Right now, the only thing separating them is a mere .74 in total points scored this year.
In the other situation, CFFI squeaked out a win by 2.4 points over Rotoworld. I have to imagine that Rotoworld is a bit disappointed in Juice Williams and his subpar showing against Louisiana-Lafayette. After big showings against Mizzou and Eastern Illinois, it was a bit of a surprise to see him regress to a statline similiar to what you would have seen last year.
It would be a huge oversight if I didn’t mention that Mock Draft Central also sits out there undefeated and is putting up some points. It’s almost as if they are being treated like the 2006 Boise St. Broncos that went undefeated but didn’t get voted into the championship game. Athlon/PFS better not take Mock Draft Central lightly as that game is only 3 away. Here are the current standings:
