Feast or Famine: Further Treasury Action
October 17th, 2008 by John Huss
In follow-up to the recent announcement by Vince Mullins, it was important for this entity to further clarify the implementation of the temporary guaranty program for the U.S. parimutuel industry. Many of the subprime bets such as superfecta and pick 6 wagers have become toxic to the economy. Another form of subprime bet, the parley, will also fall under this program even though its not of parimutuel origination. It’s important in this upset environment to ensure that the Big Brown’s of the world not only win but get to have their time out to stud. Based on that, the Treasury will provide double the normal TDIC (Thoroughbred and Dogs Insurance Corp) insurance, enabling bettors to get true odds on their action. Additionally, the Treasury will provide a portion of the $700 Billion bailout to support floundering tracks brought down by this economy. By taking this action, we hope to stabilize the markets so that we don’t see a trickle down effect into other forms of entertainment such as Fantasy College Football and tiddlywinks.
Speaking of Vegas (or was I just thinking of it?), there are some interesting totals pointing the way for fantasy owners. Here are the ones I found interesting:
Utah St. vs Nevada – over/under of 65.5. There aren’t many defenses worse than these two. Of course, the offenses need to show up also.
Arkansas St. vs ULL – over/under of 68.5!!! The Sunbelt looks to excite fantasy owners with some offense.
Southern Miss vs Rice – over/under of 69. Rice is the dog but only by 3 points. Vegas believes some points are going to show up on the board and the Blitz Index supports that theory.
UTEP vs Tulsa – the big show here with an over/under of 76.5. If my grandmother is starting in that game, you better be starting her in your fantasy lineup.
Of equal note, these games could get ugly so be careful of starting “talent” from these teams:
Clemson vs. Georgia Tech – over/under of 38.5 and Clemson showing up already down one head coach. Considering the Under is in play over 67% of the time for GTech games in October, on grass and on the road, you have to know you’ve been warned about using players from these 2 teams.
Mississippi St vs. Tennessee – this one is even worse on paper with an over/under of 36.5. The under is in play 64% of the time for Tennessee in October and at home, it’ll be a wonder if we even see a TD. Which means misery for your fantasy roster.
