Feast or Famine: What I Learned in Vegas

October 28th, 2008 by John Huss

After a four day weekend in Vegas for my so cliche bachelor party, I confirmed how much I love my soon to be bride.  I’m not saying that because she reads my articles and would sharpen her teeth in my @$$ if I didn’t say I love her.  I say it more because she’s carving a pumpkin right beside me and that knife looks awfully sharp.

Beyond that, I did take away 10 key things:

1.  If you go up big the first two days of your trip (I’m talking double your bankroll big), walk away from the craps table and immediately call Southwest.  Book the first flight home and check out of your room stat.  If you stay the remaining two days, you’ll see it all dwindle away until your down.  Call it a hunch.

2.  A gambling decathlon is a great way to pass some time with a bunch of guys while in Vegas.  Nothing screams gambling addict more than finding a way to gamble on gambling itself.  The 10 events covered everything from table games to football to Breeders Cup races.  The table games had starting values of $100 with one hour of play, the sports betting had starting values of $25 and ended when the day ended.  At the end of each round, we tallied up who had what and split the funds up.  Those that finished above the starting value keep a portion of the "profit".  The rest was split up between the prize pool for the decathlon, towards the Gala dinner on Saturday and a return of principle to each participant.  Good times!  If you want more details on the structure, shoot me an email at huss@fantasycollegeblitz.com.

3.  Vince Mullins is a really good poker player as discovered during the No Limit Hold’em tourney part of the decathlon.  6 hours of grueling play left Vince the champ (actually he chopped the pot with the other 2 remaining guys but who’s counting).  I felt good about finishing in the top third and getting knocked out on a bad beat.  I’m ok with it….really.

4.  The Blitz Index doesn’t make for a great betting tool.  Top defenses playing against each other screamed of an Under.  We screamed as the two games we used that theory on went Over.

5.  Our injury reporter, Will Carroll, really does know everyone.  His "network" got me in touch with a guy that got me in touch with a guy that set us up for a great dinner at The Social House.  I highly recommend this restaurant at Treasure Island if you are looking for great sushi and an assortment sake.

6.  Oklahoma State looked really good against Texas.  Just not moneyline good.

7.  Pitt looked really bad against Rutgers.  The "Don’t take the second half line" kinda bad.

8.  Our own Jason Roberts was right on when he did this preseason Player Spotlight on Omar Clayton from UNLV .  Watching UNLV give BYU a run was nice….what was nicer was validating our preseason research and knowing we got it out to our readers.

9.  You can play Go Fish with the little stripper cards they hand out along the Strip.  Seriously.  Just take as many as you can from the "reps" handing them out…don’t worry, they’ll give you as many as you want.

10.  Sitting in the Sportsbook on Saturday and watching all those college football games at once made me thankful for the opportunity we have in playing fantasy college football.  The scoring is higher than the NFL, the passion is stronger from the NCAA fanbase than the NFLs and there are just so many games to get interested in that matter to your fantasy roster.  If your friends don’t play the game, you really need to get them bought in.  And of course, we are very thankful that you already are a fan of the game and our site.
