FROM THE SHOTGUN…Week Twelve QB Prime-Time/Pine-Time
November 10th, 2008 by Daniel Freer
Tomorrow (November 11th) is Veterans Day…
A day we salute those who have served our country…those who gave up all and everything to protect this nation from our enemies. If it was not for our veterans, we would not be here today…able to enjoy many freedoms…able to enjoy…fantasy football.
And, as a veteran of the United States Army, it is a very special day for me, too…
Meanwhile, there seems, every season, that there are a few college players who have been around for a long time…longer than their four seasons of eligibility. The players that make you say: “Uh, gee, I thought he was in the NFL”.
Some of those college football “veterans” are making an impact…in their fifth, eighth, twenty-first…uh, OK, many seasons.
One of those “vets”, Utah QB Brian Johnson (pictured, thanks IconSMI), is a great play this week…as his Utes face woeful San Diego State…
NOTE: Most of the top QBs will be playing this week, but there are a few of this season’s top producers that will be off…check, check, and check again the NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK at the end of this article.
THE VETERAN PRIME-TIME PERFORMERS THIS WEEK:
DAVID JOHNSON (Tulsa) and CASE KEENUM (Houston): Two big-time fantasy QBs meet in a game that could see 50 points put up by each team. If your fantasy team made it this far with either QB, consider yourself well-rewarded this weekend.
JOE GANZ (Nebraska) and JOSH FREEMAN (Kansas State): I smell shoot-out in this game, and both QBs are primed to have big days. Ganz has been hot in recent weeks, and Freeman is due for a big game.
COLT McCOY (Texas) and TODD REESING (Kansas): This is a land-mine game for the Longhorns, even though KU has stumbled as of late. Reesing’s Jayhawks are still capable of keeping this close, even pulling off an upset.
ROBERT GRIFFIN (Baylor) vs Texas A&M: One of those weeks you just have to play Griffin…a game where his Bears match up well vs a Big XII team. Just imagine if BU had more talent around this true-frosh.
ZAC ROBINSON (Oklahoma State) vs Colorado: Fantasy College Blitz President Vince Mullins will be in attendance at this game…but, more important to you (uh, gee, sorry boss) is that Robinson gets to take out last week’s loss to Texas Tech on a struggling Buffaloes squad.
MATT GROTHE (South Florida) and MIKE TEEL (Rutgers): Proving that we are more than just the mouthpiece for the Big XII, we have an interesting Big East matchup. Although it’s that time of year when Grothe is breaking down, he is still a good play this week, while the Scarlet Knights’ Teel has been hot in recent weeks…not a bad late free-agent grab if your league allows it.
OTHER PRIME-TIME QBs THIS WEEK: TIM TEBOW, Florida; MAX HALL, BYU; CHASE DANIEL, Missouri; TREVOR VITTATOE, UTEP; COLIN KAEPERNICK, Nevada; KELLEN MOORE, Boise State; TERRELLE PRYOR, Ohio State; MARK SANCHEZ, USC: MICHAEL DESORMEAUX, Louisiana-Lafayette.
STILL-SERVING…MAYBE PLAY THEM THIS WEEK:
ADAM WEBER (Minnesota) vs Wisconsin: It has been a rough last two weeks for the Gophers…who went from the penthouse to the gopher hole in a short period of time. Also, the Badgers have played better football of late.
WILLIE TUITAMA (Arizona) vs Oregon: Be careful with Willie T on this road trip…at times Oregon and Autzen Stadium just goes “legendary” (for lack of a better term) a couple times per season.
DISCHARGE THEM (DO NOT PLAY) THIS WEEK:
JUICE WILLIAMS (Illinois) vs Ohio State: Wow, telling you not to play Williams is tough…considering he came of age last season in that game in Columbus where the Illini pulled the big upset…but the Buckeyes defense has been freakishly good vs the Big Ten all season.
NOTABLES OFF THIS WEEK: GRAHAM HARRELL, Texas Tech; SAM BRADFORD, Oklahoma; CHASE CLEMENT, Rice; PAT WHITE, West Virginia
