GOING DEEP: Sleepers, sits and heatmap of college fantasy wide receivers

November 19th, 2009 by Vince Mullins

THAT is why Antonio Brown is a permastarter…

Quick hit notes this week as the herd is thinned and the playoffs roll on, remember, for custom advice, hit the forums or email me directly – seems some people prefer anonymity, but I implore you – I need pageviews!

Injuries (thanks to CFFI, CollegeInjuryReport.com)

Stephen Williams, Toledo – ankle that got him out of last game against CMU, no updates. with Aaron Opelt out again and Eastern Michigan allowing everyone to run on them (sure the Eagles have the 4th best pass defense, but that is because they are next to last in rushing!) best to sit Williams for the Friday Night game unless further information warrants a change.

Jared Perry is out with a knee for Missouri, is it really possible that Danario Alexander can get more work??? Or can Iowa State focus more resources on stopping the big fella? My guess is expect more of the same awesomeness.

AJ Green is out with a shoulder sprain (the injury of the year or what?) as Georgia hosts Kentucky. Maybe not this game, but remember freshman WR Marlon Brown for next year. I was very impressed by him in the Under Armour HS All-Star game in February.

Greg Salas of Hawaii is a likely go despite a foot injury. HUGE game last week with 16 catches but has yet to practice this week. I am reminded that in all my fantasy football internet travels that the Honolulu Star-Bulletin has the best beat reporting for our hobby. I haven’t hit them up near as much as during the Chang-Brennan years, but always useful stuff. Upgrade Kealoha Pilares if Salas cannot go against the soon to have a new coach San Jose Spartans.

Heatmap and the highly anticipated sit recos after the jump

HOT

Rejoice as Emmanuel Sanders of SMU is hot again with 100+ and a touchdown in the last two. If there is a weakness to this week it is the long trip to the Appalachians. Marshall can definitely be thrown on (UCF QB Brett Hodges filleted them a couple weeks ago) as SMU makes their case for a better bowl game. It will be hard for any bowl to ignore a seven win season from an historic program with a celebrity coach.

Toren Dixon of Rice gets his first mention from me in months – Big game at home against Tulane (7-183T3!) and now hosts an awful UTEP defense. 66 is the Vegas number in this battle of bottom decile defenses, that might get hit at halftime.

SLEEPER

Ali Villanueva, Army at North Texas – consistently gets a TD (all but one game he has played), and there is no one on the Green Roster DB taller than 6-foot, meaning AV could have 10-12 inch height advantage. I smell multiple TDs. If you missed ESPN Graham Watson interview with the Big Captain, check it here

SIT (saving the bad news for last)

Last week’s reco to bench the hot DeVier Posey came up roses (see what I did there?), 2 catches for 17 yards against Iowa. I suppose Posey will gut Michigan (I am rooting big-time for Terrelle Pryor this week!), but this is about the sits.

DeMarco Sampson, San Diego State at Utah – Utah pass defense is solid allowing less than 180 ypg, and Vincent Brown is rumored to be almost back for the Aztecs. Brown’s availability is the key, but Sampson should show less strength this week anyway.

Jeremy Williams, Tulane at UCF – UCF is hot after the win over ranked Houston, and the defense is the main reason why. Consistently in the Top 30 of the BLITZindex college football rankings but most of that is based on the stout run D (4th) led by DE Bruce Miller. The Knights shut down the Cougars offense which was a much more difficult proposition, and Tulane has nothing to play for while the Knights look to creep up the bowl game roster.
