Going Deep: the 80’s version for Week 6

By Vince Mullins | October 9, 2008

80's Rock God costumeReceivers usually wear numbers in the 80’s, and while I was typing out my thoughts on the wrong side of midnight my iPod got on an 80’s kick. Naturally, I chose to combine the two together for what i hope is an informative and entertaining look at Week 6 start/sit that compares some wideouts to the greatest bands and songs of the 80’s. The look back will include thoughts of where these guys were rated in preseason.

Mike Crabtree hosting Nebraska (BI 77) - Pre-season #1 come in at #3 so far this season - solid. he has never played Nebraska, but this is a similar D that let Maclin and Love get very loose in the secondary. In retrospect, I can’t believe I was whining about his stats a couple weeks ago - he has a TD in 9 of last 10. If he is the class of the group, then you have to compare him to U2 as the biggest band to come out of the time (and the two decades afterward). Going with Bullet the Blue Sky… as both share an air of shock and awe.

Jarett Dillard - preseason #2 is right on schedule, may be #1 in PPR systems. Dillard is idle, but DBs continue to get spun around like a record.

Dez Bryant at Jeremy Maclin - these two are hotter than Sheena Easton (Prince epoch)And by hotter, I mean Touchdowns by air and by return all season. both Oklahoma State and Missouri defenses are in our top third, but if I hear that you sat either one I will hunt you. I can’t make my take any more clear than that. Dez was projected at 10 (for which I took a lot of homer-like heat), Maclin at 7 (although I had him lower before the Danario Alexander injury) - winner.

Chris Williams NMSU at Nevada - got his first TD last week versus Alcorn State, but Nevada’s 106th ranked defense should be no match for QB Chase Holbrook and Williams.

Mike Thomas, Arizona at Stanford (76) - Tuitama winks at Thomas, Thomas goes deep, he gets two TDs easily. He is even returning punts now - ridiculous potential. I saw this coming as he looked like #6 in the country, so far lagging in the teens. Underappreciated but with funk, kinda like Afrika Bambaataa.

Austin Collie and Dennis Pitta, BYU hosts New Mexico (78) - Lobo offense has no teeth, so the defense has to defend short fields. At least a TD each. I had Collie as high as #10 pre-season but he dropped based on fibula injury, he sits at #4 after a couple of huge games and that should continue as the Cougars work through MWC play. These two have created solid country-pop together, Pitta the strong steady rythym to Collie’s big-play melodies -  so perhaps a bit of Bruce Hornsby and the Range.

Brandon Banks, K-State at Texas A&M (99)- smallest permastarter ever, I fully expect him to get back on the tracks after a quiet game versus the Red Raiders. From underrated JUCO to national force, it has been a Fantastic Voyage (no, not the Coolio version). I am ashamed to admit that he was nowhere on my preseason list, but I am sure he was on no one elses.

Percy Harvin, Florida hosts LSU (17) - dammit if he isnt more injury prone than Jose Feiciano. I wonder if the added bulk will put more stress on his feet and knees. As of press time he is playing, stay tuned here and you will definitely get an update on the Burrito. Never knowing his injury status has me Knowing that Something is Going On (Abba lead singer Frida with Phil Collins on drums - admit it, you are air drumming). Due to injuries he is nowehere near the #11 pre-season rank.

Erron Riley, Duke - idle. He has exceeded my #55 expectations.

Eric Decker, Minnesota at Illinois (96) - Illini defense is terrible, Decker is coming off a 13 catch (no TD) record day against Indiana - 90 yards and a TD are a lock. I had him at #13 in August, #10 now - some call him soft due to lack of TDs, but sometimes soft is good when put together well like Christopher Cross Ride Like the Wind.

Emmanuel Sanders, SMU hosts Tulsa (65) - before this season I called this one of the Fantasy Games of the Year, but SMU is only averaging 21 ppg and Tulsa over 50. Mustangs only converting 35% of their third downs. somehow Sanders is still a top 15 guy in a great system so you gotta roll with him.

Mark Hafner, Houston hosts UAB (105) - huge number for a TE or a WR, start in all leagues.

Permastarters, but on the bubble

Aldrick Robinson, SMU - wonders what he has to do to get on the list, moving up.

Casey Fitzgerald, North Texas - only two quality starts, and only one TD. He does get two easy defenses in a row now (#112 ULL and #88 ULM). Our player most similar to a one-hit wonder, so Casey lives In a Big Country.

Bryan Anderson, CMU hosts Temple - you have been warned. Need 100 and a touch or you start getting pine, shoulder injury or not. Neither Fitzgerald nor Anderson appear in the Top 50 after early ratings of 8 and 9.

Mostlystarters…

Darius Passmore - a remarkably flaccid performance on national TV against Cincy, a bend but don’t break D.

Jamarko Simmons, WMichigan - main beneficiary of Tim Hiller’s excellent campaign, but still a possession receiver and a ferocious blocker.

Jordan Shipley, Texas vs. Oklahoma - I could not argue sitting him this week against the Sooners #12 defense at the Red River Rivalry (grab some Chocolate-covered bacon on a stick at the fair Jordan…). but after that Longhorns get some shootouts and Shipley will be handy. PS -cut the Defense now no matter how well they are playing, the probabilities are not on your side as they face Missouri, Oklahoma St., Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas.

Other good starts - Oklahoma guys (pick two like Panera, likely Iglesias and Johnson), Ute WRs at Wyoming (they are used to altitude), Fontrell Forrest at Houston (tonight!), any Beaver WR vs Washington State.

PINE TIME

Any Sun Devil WR at Southern Cal - Rudy Carpenter has a bone sticking out of his ankle, faces our #4 defense and Sparky had to hide his face after the UNLV upset. Take Mike Jones helmet away and do not let him in the game.

Raushaun Greer, Colorado State hosts TCU (15) - Horned Frogs are fourth in nation in yards per play allowed at under 3.9. Greer makes his bones with big plays that TCU just doesn’t allow unless they play Oklahoma. Rams are not the Sooners. Raushaun, this week you get a lovely consolation prize.

Sleepers

Ty Hilton, FIU hosts MTSU - went huge against North Texas last week (get in line), but you cannot ignore two 60y TDs in one game no matter who they face. FIU has a couple good results this year, which equals their total of their entire previous existence. Good for a pickup.

Jason Chery, ULL at North Texas - speaking of the Lean Green, Chery has picked up TDs in each of the last three as the Ragin Cajuns have gone on a scoring fest. Not a lot of touches but he and Tyrell Fenroy probably need sleep aids in anticipation of this matchup.
