GOING DEEP: Wide Receiver Looks for Week 5

September 29th, 2009 by Drew Smith

PERMASTARTERS

Dezmon Briscoe21

WR Dezmon Briscoe (thanks Icon SMI)

Dez Bryant OkSt vs. Idle

Dezmon Briscoe KU vs. Idle

Mardy Gilyard Cincy at Miami-OH (#1 Fantasy WR through 4 games)

Eric Decker Minny vs. Minnesota

Jordan Shipley Texas vs. Idle

Emmanuel Sanders SMU at TCU (tough matchup even for Sanders)

Golden Tate vs. Washington

Ryan Broyles at Miami (the Canes defense has not been dominant, ok to start)

And welcome to the club…

Greg Salas Hawaii at La Tech – Salas has 100+ yards and scored in every game this season.

PERMA – STAT: Jeremy Williams of Tulane had a monster game last week with 10 catches for 222 yards and 2 scores.  The odd thing- Tulane only completed 10 passes on the game, no one other than Williams caught a pass.

Fave plays for Week Four

Any WR for Texas Tech vs. New Mexico – The Red Raiders got a lot of flack for their lost to Houston last week.  Don’t be shocked to see them put up 60+ against poor New Mexico.

Any WR on Houston at UTEP – The Longhorns put up 60+ last week against UTEP and one could argue that Houston’s offense is just as good.  The Miners have been horrible this season and it won’t get any prettier this week.

Jeremy Williams, Tulane at Army – Tulane is not good enough to blow out Army so expect them to pass for four quarters, which means Williams should see double digit touches again this week.

Eric Page, Toledo at Ball State – Page is close to a PermaStarter with nothing but MAC opponents left on the schedule.  We know what he does against Big Ten teams, but I would like to see how the offense of Toledo plays when facing teams they feel they can run on.

Regardless of whether he is a PermaStarter or not, Page has a great matchup this week.

Duke Calhoun, Memphis at UCF – Calhoun has been on fire since Memphis switched QBs to Tyler Bass two weeks ago.  The Knights have one of the better defenses in CUSA but that doesn’t mean they are good.  UCF has a young secondary that has been not been able to stop the #1 WR in any game this year.

Rodney Bradley, Hawaii at La Tech – Hawaii has often struggled in years past when playing on the mainland but that doesn’t seem to be the case early in this season.  Bradley has come on strong in the last two games and should have little trouble getting open against Tech’s defense.

T.Y. Hilton, FIU at UL-Monroe – Hilton is about to explode with the tough part of his schedule over. He is one of my favorite starters this week since he faces one of the worse pass defenses around. Super sleeper

Dwayne Harris, ECU at Marshall – Harris finally playing CUSA defense last week showed how explosive he can be against one of the better defenses in the conference in UCF.  The Pirates seem committed to getting the ball in the hands of Harris anyway they can, making him a great super sleeper start against Marshall.

VICIOUS PINE

Aldrick Robinson, SMU at TCU– Robinson has been a major bust thus far and really for no explainable reason.  I am not ready to give up on him yet, but this is not the week that I would expect him to get back on track.

DeAndre Brown of SMiss at UAB– Add a shoulder injury to the nagging leg and you get a player that is too risky to start.  SMiss should have little problem with UAB so it would be surprising to see Brown on the field much.

Add to watch list

From last week: Shaquelle Evans and Duval Kamara of Notre Dame and Dane Sanzenbacher of Ohio State.

Watch Tyson Liggett from Colorado State- this guy came out of nowhere, I mean even the Colorado St. folks don’t know much about him. However with Rashaun Greer in the doghouse for too many dropped balls, it was Liggett who stepped up big against BYU.  Watch to see how involved he is this week before picking up.

David Leonard from Wyoming, The Cowboys signed arguably their biggest named recruit this past season in QB Austyn Carta-Samuels.  It took 3 games before they turned the program over with Carta-Samuels last week, who led them to a huge upset over UNLV.  Leonard was the go-to receiver for Carta-Samuels last week and one to watch as the season progresses.

Normally you can follow Vince on weekends at www.twitter.com/vincemullins, but he is on a boat. You can email me at drew@fantasycollegeblitz.com and I can get back to you. Or, you can wait until Oct 3rd if you would rather ask Vince. As Vince said last week…’That’s right shorty, get your towels ready cuz its about to go down, I am on a m-f’in boat!’
