Going Deep: Dillard to add to records against Tulsa
By Vince Mullins | September 30, 2008
Remember, if you take on too much risk and cannot field a suitable lineup, Fantasy College Blitz will bail you out with an injection of much needed intellectual capital.
No votes required, significant restrictions do apply, see dealer for details.
PERMASTARTERS
- Mike Crabtree, Texas Tech at Kansas State (BI 20) - #20 Wildcat defense but that was achieved against much lesser competition.
- Chris Williams, New Mexico State hosts Alcorn State (FCS) - ahh, homecoming…Troy put up 733 yards up on the Braves earlier this year. Ouch.
- Jarett Dillard (right, Houston Chronicle), Rice at Tulsa (71)- potential fantasy game of the year! Dillard has a huge lead in the active career TD catch mark (50-28), and his tandem with Chase Clement is histories most prolific TD combo (cool picture gallery of North Texas game here) at 40 and counting. Tulsa BlitzIndex looks OK, but they had trouble stopping FCS Central Arkansas last week - granted UCA has an NFL prospect at QB but that was not the tune-up they needed ahead of the Owls.
- Mike Thomas, Arizona hosts Washington (#116) - Start of the week as Washington defense is likely as bad as their BlitzIndex suggests, but they have lined up opposite BYU and Oklahoma already. With Locker hurt the Huskies will likely struggle to maintain field position that only helps AZ.
- Jeremy Maclin, Missouri at Nebraska (39)- the Husker defense has seen nothing like this all season, wouldn’t shock me to see the Tigers score 50 again. They remind me a lot of that 2006 Louisville team that could not be stopped.
- Austin Collie and Dennis Pitta, BYU hosts Utah State (#114) - risk here is that these two never return from the halftime speech in the midst of a GT-Cumberland College like blowout.
- Percy Harvin, Florida at Arkansas (108) - if there is a defense in the Big 6 conferences worse than Washington, it is likely the Razorbacks. Gators should be an unruly bunch, and perhaps we now will witness what a healthy Percy Harvin can do now that he went huge over Ole Miss in the loss.
- Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State host Texas A&M (69) - if you exclude the rain-soaked Missouri State game, Dez is averaging 7-115T2. No one on the Aggie roster can cover him, and Revellie probably couldn’t catch him. I had my questions about the Cowboy offense without Larry Fedora at the helm, after seeing them play three times this year now I fully expect this balanced spread offense to continue its 500 ypg and 50 ppg ways.
- Bryan Anderson, CMU IDLE - at risk of getting cut from this list. He needs ot come out like a volcao after this dormant week.
- Erron Riley, Duke at GT (11) - Tough matchup, we will see just how far Coach Cutcliffe has progressed this week. Yellowjacket pass rush is the key here, but Riley is the key to the Blue Devil offense and will get his touches.
- Brandon Banks, Kansas State host Texas Tech (20) - little fella doesn’t disappoint as he has scored in every game and never less than 88 yards. TT can bring some heat, will be interesting to see how the Wildcats react after a game against ULL.
- Eric Decker, Minnesota hosts Indiana (76) - remember how Ball State obliterated the Hoosiers, even after Dante Love was injured? Expect similar here as the Gophers are well-balanced.
- Casey Fitzgerald, North Texas hosts FIU (82) - if you can trade the “Black Swan”, do it because this offense is just dead but you may get some “perception premium”. If you can’t trade him this might be his first breakout. FIU won its first game on the road EVER this past week, but this is a bottom-half defense.
- Emmanuel Sanders, SMU at UCF (89) - Mustangs with an inexperienced QB on the road could be an issue, but the UCF offense is so bad that it even drains the stats of a pretty-good defensive and special teams unit. Expect a couple short TDs.
- Mark Hafner, Houston idle
OTHER PRIME TIME STARTERS
Stephen Williams, Toledo at Ball State - these teams always create a track meet.
Brennan Marion, Tulsa hosts Rice (116) - this guy gets deep more often than a submarine and again this year he has three TD over 50 yards. Rice likes to blitz and leave their coverage guys alone with wideout and that is unlikely to work with the vertical onslaught of Tulsa. I predict 3 catches for 212 yards and two TDs.
Jeremy Childs, Wednesday Boise host Louisiana Tech (65) - look deeper on the BI, and you see that the Bulldogs are #105 in yards per play allowed with 5.95 (median is 5.22). That smells like a great opportunity for deep balls from the new QB that is all the rage in the Northwest.
Maurice Jones, Memphis at UAB (102) - shoulder is a go, so is Big Mo
Arrelious Benn, Illinois at Michigan - of course now that I believe in him, he will gegin a steady decline.
Games where the defense rests (with our defense rankings in parentheses)…
Washington State (118) at UCLA (109) - Defenses like the fenced border with Mexico, just the part without the fence
Rice (116) at Tulsa (71) - I will be disappointed if less than 1000 yards and 80 points are put on the board.
Nevada (114) at Idaho (118) - remember Marko Mitchell if you need a pickup. Weather not an issue in the Kibbie Dome
UTEP (107) at Southern Miss (83) - hey, whatever happened to Jeff Moturi?
UNLV (105) at Colorado State (101) - This may be the most uninspiring matchup of the weekend.
