Official Scoring System
June 1st, 2008 by Drew Smith
One of the beauties of fantasy sports remain in its customization. They call it fantasy for a reason – each league can make the structure, schedule and scoring system anyway they can all agree upon.
That said, there are some nuances to college football that require your scoring system to be as simple as possible. There is no central stat recording nor reporting agency, and that can lead to the same game reported differently in two media outlets. Also, many new to fantasy sports in general need a place to start, like a template, to begin their league discussion of scoring systems.
So to address that, we post our official offensive scoring system which not only is used in our Expert League but also serves as the basis for all of our cheatsheets and player rankings.
- 1 point for 20 passing yards (some leagues like 25 yard increments)
- 1 point for 10 yards from scrimmage (we recommend you combine rushing and receiving yards)
- 2 points for any two-point conversion
- 6 points for a rushing or receiving touchdown
- 4 points for a passing touchdown (many leagues use 3 pts, others use 6pts)
- -1 point for every interception thrown (some leagues score picks as -2)
- 1 point for an extra point kicked
- -1 point for a missed extra point (whether blocked or shanked)
- 3 points for a made field goal (some offer bonuses for long distance kicks, like +1 bonus for 40+, or +3 bonus for a 50+ yarder)
Defense and Special Teams is another matter, open to much discussion (google “Fantasy defense scoring” to see the varied approaches).
- 1 point for a sack
- 2 points for a turnover (fumble or interception, some leagues do only one)
- 5 points for a safety (some go with three, but this is so rare it deserves more points)
- 6 points for a return TD (punt, kickoff, or interception)
- 5 points for holding offense under 300 yards
- 10 points for a shutout (may leagues only do 5 points)
Also, we want to clarify what we call BCS-only leagues - think Big Six from conferences in the old BCS Alliance - ACC, SEC, Big East, Pac Ten, Big 12, Big Ten and the Independents like Notre Dame.
The conferences and teams usually excluded from the BCS-only leagues (or Major conferences) are MAC, Conference USA, Sun Belt, Mountain West, and the WAC. Independent teams like Army and Navy are included in this group.
