Playoff Burrito Wrap up – Fantasy Playoff Triskaidekaphobia edition
November 14th, 2009 by Vince Mullins
First off my condolences to those of you absolutely screwed by the Cincinnati QB rotation last night – Tony Pike did a fantasy football impersonation of Mariano Rivera, closing drives in the red zone with two short TD passes on four attempts. That resulted in Zach Collaros lowest output of his short stint as starter – he should fear Friday the 13th now.
Before you curse out Brian Kelly and yank him from your Coach of the Year ballot – at least be as understanding as Tennessee Vols fan and robbery victim Corey Zickefoose.
Corey Zickefoose: I think they should still be able to play football, regardless. Tennessee is my place. You know, it’s my football team.
Reporter: Even after they put a gun in your face, you say let them play football?
Corey Zickefoose: Yeah. It’s Tennessee. That’s the way it is sometimes.
Corey, the Tennessee Chamber of Tourism would like a word with you.
Weather
No need to worry about Tropical Storm Ida in the Southeast it has disappated and has no effect on todays games.
The historically strong Nor’easter soaked the Virginia and NC area with almost a foot of rain, so beware of all ACC matchups for some halo effects of the storm. I could see muted performance from Georgia Tech and the Miami Hurricanes. The gametime weather may be nice but the effects on the soaking will put focus on the groundskeeping crews.
Big winds expected in The Long Island area so we could see 50mph in the ground battle of VMI at Army. This will mean more for some NFL matchups on Sunday.
Start-sit after the jump, updates throughout the day on my Twitter feed.
START-SIT
Daniel Freer focuses on the QB sits, and he has already nailed it with the recommended Pine Time on USF BJ Daniels…
Drew Smith in the Power I Formation has a super sleeper and some interesting insight on the biggest games.
Vince Mullins focuses on sit of DeVier Posey while Going Deep for wide receiver insight. Did you notice that Ohio LaVon Brazill finally had a nice game Tuesday Night? Too bad it was three weeks after highlighting him…
CollegeFantasyFootballInsider.com’s Jim McDonald congratulates you on reading his article because it means you are still alive. Mazeltov! His Start-Sit has some big names on the sit list like Tim Tebow, Toby Gerhart and Dez Briscoe. I see he also likes my Twitter-special-TE-Pick-Up-Lock-of-the-Week Oregon State TE Joe Halahuni.
Phil Steele comes strong with the mother of all super sleeper QB picks (scroll halfway) - Ryan Griffin of Tulane facing Rice. If this kid starts to heat up, that Tulane offense will be fierce.
INJURIES
Triage time highlights Dr. William Carroll’s in-depth analysis on the most impactful injuries in college football. If you want to learn more about what the dreaded A/C Sprian is (Rusty Smith, Sam Bradford) this is the article to read.
Updates on the medical beat (courtesy CollegeInjuryReport.com):
I don’t think I saw this with such certainty, but San Diego State WR Vincent Brown is out for the seaosn with his sever thumb ligament damage. Even more reason to flog myself for cutting DeMarco Sampson in Week Three…
Kentucky slash Randall Cobb listed as probable after taking the EKU game off at the last minute.
With Bilal Powell nicked up, we should see RB Victor Anderson return for Louisville against Syracuse. If you need a last minute starter this might work!
Virginia Qb situation is still in doubt for both Jameel Sewell and Mark Verica, but I doubt any fantasy playoff participants care?
Maybe FIU QB Paul McCall is on a couple rosters – out last week, probable this week vs. North Texas.
Oklahoma State RB Kendall Hunter is probable, had ten touches last week but do not expect he will take away the main ma status of Keith Toston. Texas Tech named QB Taylor Potts the starter in Stillwater tonight also – you know what game I will be watching.
Iowa State QB Austen Arnaud bruised hand is still bugging him, and with Christian Ponder out for Florida State I would like to introduce you to EJ Manuel – I think you will see a BJ Daniels like coming out party against an average Wake Forest defense.
Remember Bo Levi Mitchell? Probable but Kyle Padron still listed as #1 as June jones signal caller for SMU.
ETCETERA
TCU Football is the #10 search term on Yahoo! this week, still behind Manny Pacquiao but ahead of Barack Obama.
CFBStats.com dug up a great study about all the huge passing games last week.
Just for kicks, I will throw out a apnea-like-deep-sleeper call on QB Kevin Prince at Wazzou. I like the kid’s skills, the Neuheisel tutelage and the matchup. At least keep him on your 2010 list.
Active career NCAA leader in All-Purpose Yards? I thought it was CJ Spiller, but I forgot about another four year starter in Brandon West of Western Michigan.
Finally, here is the difference between efficiency and effectiveness – San Jose State is the only team in the nation to convert EVERY SINGLE RED ZONE POSSESSION into a score. So they sit atop the national rankings in RZ Efficiency by going 14-14. I will take Houston at #43 and their 49-58 stat….
