Power I: Finally….Conference Play
By Drew Smith | September 24, 2008
Now we are starting to get into the fun of the season as most teams start playing conference games. This is when we start finding out who were the first months contenders and pretenders. Last week was sort of a quiet week for running backs, with very few ‘huge’ games. However, I suspect this week will be different as there are many fun and exciting matchups from the running back positions. I will talk about some of the less obvious ones as well as some injuries.
Charles Scott, LSU: A lot of people just assume LSU is a RBBC type program because they have been for a decade now but the truth is that Les Miles has a long history of featuring just one back. The problem is that he has never had a back he felt could be his workhorse but that is all beginning to change with the emergence of Scott. LSU faces a Mississippi State defense that ranks 94th against the run making him a great start this week.
James Starks, Buffalo: Reports are indicating that Starks will miss another game this week so nothing good will come from starting him.
Andre Anderson, Tulane: Anderson has now had back-to-back 30+ carries and now gets to face off the 113th ranked rush defense. This makes Anderson a must start in all leagues.
Noel Devine, West Virginia: Devine had a nice game last week in the loss to Colorado State but it still wasn’t the game that owners have been waiting for. Some will accuse me of drinking too much of the Devine Kool-Aid but my gut says that this is week Devine blows up against an average Marshall defense.
Mike Goodson, Texas A&M: This is a lost season for the Aggies as new coach Mike Sherman to continue to use the rest of the season to evaluate all of his players. It remains to be seen how much of a workload Goodson will get but even just 15 touches against the Army defense makes for an excellent option to start.
Jourdan Brooks, Rutgers: Tough to say if Brooks will be a great option over the course of the entire season but for this week he will look like a superstar. Rutgers is 0-3 so don’t expect to see them get cute against Morgan State, instead I suspect we will see a heavy dose of the run and Brooks getting 20+ fantasy points
Da’Rel Scott, Maryland: Scott got off to a great start capitalizing on the injury to Morgan Green but then himself got injured and missed last week’s game against EMU. Maryland is a traditional RBBC offense so the days of Scott getting 20+ carries are probably over. He is expected to play this week but is a poor option against Clemson.
Eugene Jarvis, Kent State: Everything is pointing to Jarvis missing another game with his ankle injury so you need to sit him.
DaJuane Collins, Toledo: Collins had a coming out party against EMU two weeks ago and was off to a great start against Fresno gaining 138 yards and 2 TDs on only 15 carries before injuring his ankle. He is expected to play this week and has a sweet matchup against FIU but if you have another option that is appealing then go with that as there is always risk in starting a guy who didn’t finish the game the previous week.
Tyrell Fenroy, La Lafayette: Fenroy has been slowed by injuries to the start the season but in his first game back blew up against Kent State . A lot of people will make Fenroy an auto-sit going up against Kansas State but as Louisville showed last week this is a team that can run on. Not a great matchup but certainly someone that can grind out 8-12 points if your other options are weak.
Ryan Matthews, Fresno State: Matthews gets to face off against an UCLA team that ranks 83rd against the rush. The Bruins offense is terrible meaning Matthews should get plenty of opportunities and should go 100+ and 1 score.
