QB UPDATE 08/21/08
By Daniel Freer | August 21, 2008
Keeping me busier than Michael Phelps agent…making me as hyper as a Romanian gynmnastics coach…running me as fast as Usain Bolt…your latest QB updates.
Good news for Houston QB Case Keenum (pictured, thanks IconSMI ), who was named the starting QB for the Cougars.
Keenum was not the only one who heard some good news:
NORTH TEXAS:
Head Coach Todd Dodge is really committed to Giovanni Vizza as his #1 QB…even not naming his son, Riley, on the three-deep at the position. Vizza’s backup will be Daniel Meager, who Vizza replaced as the starter during the 2007. One caveat: The younger Dodge will be on the travelling squad for road games. I get the feeling that the elder Dodge will hold off playing his son as much as possible…especially early in the season. I do not see the younger Dodge sitting much if UNT starts 0-5. This is definitely the one fantasy QB spot to handcuff in 2008.
WISCONSIN:
Allan Evridge, the Kansas State transfer, has won the starting QB job at Wisconsin. Probably the big winner in this decision will be all the fantasy owners who have and/or covet Badger TE Travis Beckum. Although Evridge is not the highest-regarded fantasy QB, his former KSU experience will be a plus for the Badger offense, which does not need a superstar QB to thrive…just a steady one.
SMU:
The favorite to start at QB looks to be true-frosh Bo Levi Mitchell, ahead of Braden Smith. But, never rule out Justin Willis in the mix. While at Hawaii, note that June Jones did not start Colt Brennan in the first game of the 2005 season, and only became the starter later in the season. (Trite Alert) The rest is history….
PITTSBURGH:
Bill Stull was named as the starter earlier this week. Stull, whose season was shortened by injury last season, beat out Pat Bostick (who took over for Stull last season). The only thing keeping your humble QB analyst from calling Stull a "sleeper" QB is RB LeSean McCoy, who had a breakout freshman season in 2007. You know McCoy will be getting the ball quite a bit this season.
