Reviewing early returns of Vince’s deep sleeper RB list
September 9th, 2010 by Vince Mullins
I thought it would be a good time to review my Deep Sleeper RB picks for 2010, as most are still not owned more than 5% in either Athlon or CBS leagues. I know this because most of my expert league Fantasy College Football Invitational roster has them since I fixed up a roster with 8 auto-picked kickers. It is instructive to keep your sleeper list around for at least the first month of the season as injuries and EBay sales of game-used jerseys dramatically affect college football depth charts.
Ronnie Hillman, San Diego State - TD in his first game, but split carries with Davon Brown in the 47-0 opener versus Nicholls State. So much upside, I contemplate starting him at New Mexico State.
Alex Green, Hawaii – in a weird USC game, 9 carries for 66 yds and a touch. also, good pass protection. Good start at Army.
Damien Berry, Miami (FL) – 45-0 blowout of FAMU, now off to the horseshoe to play Ohio State this Saturday. TD on the board, plus the ankle injury further clouding the athletic future of Graig Cooper, means you should roster this second-generation Cane immediately if you can.
Pat Shed, UAB - QB David Isabelle went nuts with 214 yards rushing, Shed chipped in with punt returns and 12 touches for 82 yards – but no TD. Worthy of a bench spot.
James Montgomery, Washington State - fumbled first carry against Oklahoma State, split carries as well in the blowout. Not ready to give up on him yet.
Derrick Hall, Tulsa – MIA. JC Watts kid has the gig along with Jamad Williams. A likely cut.
Al-Terek McBurse, Purdue – new #1 RB (given Ralph Bolden injury) with a new QB in Robert Marve projected, but worse performance of any active player in college football this past weekend (4 carries, -2 yards)
Ronnie Wingo, Arkansas - a bit of a logjam in Fayetteville, but I feel Wingo is the top back in the Bobby Petrino offense. And Petrino commits to running more. Yawner versus Tennessee Tech, this week ULM. Stay tuned
Deep-REM sleepers
Lonnie Pryor, FSU – my trusted Seminole source says Pryor got his touchdown versus Samford, but still barely on radar versus Oklahoma this weekend.
Cameron Marshall, Arizona State - 4 touches, one big playin an 80-yard TD. The lack of touches concern me, but has big-play ability.
Lamon Muldrow, San Jose State – JUCO who bombed in 2009, they likely lean on him in 2010 with new coach. Keep him on watch list as he bombed versus Alabama, now off to Wisconsin.
Robert Elliot, Mississippi State – Year Two of Coach Dan Mullen, the OC behind the great Urban Meyer offenses. Maybe a RBBC situation, but Elliott has the most talent.
Thomas Merriweather, Miami (OH) –ejected from Florida game, the Dayton Daily News paints an ugly picture of Gator scrum action.
Jasmin Hopkins, Northern Illinois – productive JUCO who could spell Spann for a span or two…six touches in Week One
