Runningback Rankings: Top 26-50

August 15th, 2008 by Drew Smith

See the entire RB Cheatsheet here - just updated tonight.

26) Eric Kettani – Navy: Kettani is technically a fullback but is a main piece in the Navy’s throw-back offense. He battled injuries for most of the season but still accounted for 880 yards and 10 TDs while sharing time with fellow fullback Adam Ballard. If healthy, Kettani will make a push for 1,000 yards and 15 TDs.

27) Tyrell Fenroy – La Lafayette: Fenroy is a model of consistency as he has broken the 1,000 yard mark 3 consecutive seasons with a modest amount of scores in each season. In 2007, Fenroy missed a few games before coming back to finish the season strong. Expect Fenroy to finish his college career strong and represents one of the safer picks around.

28) Evan Royster – Penn State: Royster takes over as the starter after averaging 6.3ypc for 513 yards and 5 TDs in a backup role last season. Royster should see 200+ carries and while not a glamorous pick, he makes for a solid #2 back on your fantasy team.

29) Mike Ford – USF: Ford is a big-time talent who should live in the endzone this season and if he can stay out of the coaches doghouse could have monster season. He ran for 645 yards and 12 TDs in ’07 despite playing an insignificant role in the offense.

30) Deonte’ Jackson – Idaho: Jackson, the nephew of NFL star Steven Jackson, ran for 1,175 yards and 7 TDs as a freshman last year despite battling an ankle injury the second half of the season. The Vandals return all their starting OL and their QB so expect to see Jackson build off of last year’s numbers.

31) Andre Anderson – Tulane: A common mistake people make is assuming the replacement to a great back will put up similar type numbers but it is important to know the difference between a system back and truly talented back. Matt Forte is a true talent who will be starting in the NFL as a rookie this season so don’t make the mistake and over-reach for Anderson assuming he will be a Top 15 back. Tulane has not proven to be a system pick for running backs. With that said, I do like Anderson and think he will be a solid back who I feel comfortable selecting just after the Top 30.

32) DeJuane Collins – Toledo: As the backup to 1,500-yard runner Jalen Parmele last year, Collins averaged 6.4 ypc for 636 yards and 7 TDs on only 99 carries. Now as the full-time starter, he should easily top 1,000 yards and 10 TDs.

33) Mike Goodson – Texas AM: Goodson is a talented back that has yet to live up to his hype but new head coach Mike Sherman is claiming to build his offense around him. While I think we will see more of Goodson, I do not see how he will be able to take the step towards the Top 20 with Jorvorskie Lane around stealing the TDs.

34) Patrick Jackson – La Tech: Johnson had a solid season running for 940 yards and 8 TDs while adding another 227 yards receiving. The senior back should have little problem exceeding the 1,000 yard mark rushing and 10 TDs this season.

35) Greg Little – North Carolina: Little and the Tar Heals are getting quite a bit of hype this season as they return a ton of starters. Little was converted from WR to RB last season and had decent results in the two games he started. He is expected to be the work-horse this year behind an average, but experienced offense line.

36) Frank Summers – UNLV: The ‘Tank’ rumbled to 1,180 and 10 yards combined rushing/receiving last season but wore down late in season. Another year of conditioning should help Summers remain effective later in the season.

37) Josh Haden – Boston College: A big-time recruit, Haden is expected to be the starting running back as a true freshman after lighting it up in the off-season. Everything I have read about Haden has made me as much of a believer in someone as you can without seeing him play but the Eagles have too many questions on offense to get too carried away with the projections.

38) Michael Smith – Arkansas: Smith was the 4th back in the rotation last year who averaged 6.6ypc but on only 46 carries. With Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis all moving on to the NFL, Smith assumes the role as the featured back. Standing at a generously listed 5-7 173lbs he will never be the workhorse but actually fits in nicely in the spread offense of new coach Bobby Petrino.

39) Terry Grant – Alabama: Last year I correctly predicted that Grant would jump out the gate strongly against weak opponents only to struggle against the better defenses in the SEC. Grant did just this as he amassed 307 yards and 5 TDs in the first 2 games and 584 and 3 TDs in the remaining 9 games. Grant played through some injuries last year but is now healthy and will make a move towards 1,000 yards and 10 TDs. However, expect most of these stats to come in the form of a few monster games.

40) Vondrell McGee – Texas: I am a fan of McGee and look forward to seeing him in an expanded roll this season. I would love to rank him higher but for whatever reason he has been labeled as a ‘change-of-pace’ back and it appears that Texas will be rotating other backs in the mix. McGee’s has a ton of risk so draft him knowing he will most like be a boom/bust type pick.

41) Ryan McCants – Oregon State: The Beavers will most likely use some form of RBBC this year as McCants is the big move-the-chains type back while freshman Jacquizz Rodgers is expected to bring excitement to the offense with his expect big-play potential. McCants should score plenty of TDs, giving him decent fantasy value.

42) Jeremiah Johnson – Oregon: How good is Johnson when healthy? Good enough to steal 50% of the carries from NFL Top 15 Draft pick Jonathan Stewart. Johnson is coming off a nasty knee injury so there are plenty of concerns to his ability to return to form and also hold up. Johnson ran for 644 yards and 10 TDs on only 103 carries before his injury last season.

43) Reggie Arnold – Arkansas State: Arnold has been a model of consistency over his first two seasons at Jonesboro (this is where Arkansas State is located). Arnold does not contribute anything in the receiving game but is pretty much a lock for 1,000 yards rushing with 6-10 TDs.

44) Jorvorskie Lane – Texas A.M.: A lock for 20 TDs rushing is not something I anticipate writing very often but that is the case with Lane. There have been plenty of talks about how new coach Sherman wants to build the offense around Goodson and I believe he will. However Lane is unstoppable inside the 5-yard line and his role will not change, making him a lock for 20 TDs again this year.

45) Keithen Valentine – Kansas State: Valentine is a walk-on who now finds himself on the top of the depth chart after Leon Patton, Kwamaine Brown and Daniel Thomas do not appear to be playing for the Wildcats in 2008. All the reports say that Valentine has been a star in the spring/fall practices so he has to be someone on your radar as a back in this offense with 200+ carries will almost certainly crack the 1,000 yard barrier.

46) Stafon Johnson – USC: The Trojans are so loaded at RB, it is hard to get too excited over one single guy. Look for Pete Carroll to play matchups and the hot hand through the season, making starting an USC back difficult. Although I would avoid the Trojans backs altogether in most leagues, his overall stats should be respectable when it is all said and done.

47) James Davis – Clemson: Davis is a potential fantasy stud that gets held back by the coaching staff’s man-crush on C.J. Spiller. In this case, the coaches are correct in trying to do whatever they can to get the ball in Spiller’s hands but this hurts the fantasy value of Davis significantly as he will completely disappear in several games

48) Kory Sheets – Purdue: Sheets does a good job in finding the endzone as he scored a total of 13 TDs last season. However, h splits his carries too much to be anything more than a role player on your fantasy team.

49) Carlos Brown – Michigan: It is really starting to shape up like we will see a straight RBBC between Brown and Brandon Minor. Brown gets the edge because he appears to be more of a Rich Rodriguez style back. The offensive line is one of the best in the nation so expect the Wolverines to lean heavily on the run as they attempt to get the mess at QB worked out.

50) Frank Goodin – La Monroe: Monroe gets a chance to shine after Calvin Dawson dominated the carries the last two seasons. It is unlikely he will be as successful as Dawson was but he should come close to 1,000 yards and 6-8 TDs.
