SEC 2008 ALL-FANTASY TEAM
January 9th, 2009 by Daniel Freer
Few will be surprised who is our Southeastern Conference Fantasy Player of the Year for 2008.
However, earlier this season, it did not appear that our honoree was going to win – much less even make our All-Fantasy team. Like most who win college football’s highest honor one season, and return for another they usually do not match their previous seasons’ performance.
Gosh, the start of the 2008 season was so slow for our honoree…even Superman was going to change out of this guy’s pajamas and underwear!
However, after an upset loss to Ole Miss in late September, Florida QB Tim Tebow (photo, thanks IconSMI), our Fantasy College Blitz: SEC Player of the Year, totally turned his (and the Gators) season around starting with his near-Gipper-like post-game press conference to take sole responsibility for the loss to the Rebels.
Tebow, a junior from Ponte Vedra, FL (played at Nease HS), did not duplicate his Heisman Trophy-winning numbers from 2007, but still put up totals that would make most QBs envious…throwing for over 2100 yards and 22 TDs, and, rushing for over 400 yards with 11 rushing TDs (stats through November 22nd games).
Joining Tebow on the SEC All-Fantasy Team are…
(All statistics quoted are through November 22nd games)
QUARTERBACK:
TIM TEBOW – Florida: (see above)
RUNNING BACKS:
KNOWSHON MORENO – Georgia: This sophomore has been unstoppable since he first carried the ball last season…rushing for over 1200 yards and 15 TDs in 2008. Moreno also added over 250 yards receiving.
CHARLES SCOTT – LSU: Scott bowled over many to make this All-Fantasy team, rushing for over 1000 yards and 14 TDs while becoming the featured RB for the Tigers.
MICHAEL SMITH – Arkansas: Nobody had bigger shoes to fill in college football than the Hawgs Smith…in replacing three Hawg RB NFL draftees (two first-rounders) from last season, Smith rushed for over 1000 yards and 8 TDs….and snagged over 300 yards receiving with 2 TD catches.
RECEIVERS:
PERCY HARVIN – Florida: Although lining up mainly as a receiver, he rushed for more yards than he had receiving…and scored 15 total TDs. And, that was with Harvin missing some time during the 2008 season due to nagging injuries.
A.J. GREEN – Georgia: Green really helped the Bulldogs open up their passing game this season, with nearly 900 yards receiving and 7 TD catches.
BRANDON LaFELL – LSU: This Tiger WR seems to make big plays quite often, and in 2008 had over 800 yards and 7 TDs receiving.
KICKER:
JONATHAN PHILLIPS – Florida: Although he did not have a lot of FG attempts during the season, Phillips got to kick a lot of extra-points…enough of them to lead all SEC kickers in scoring.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:
FLORIDA: As dangerous as the Gators offense is, their defense was arguably the best in the nation. The UF defenders snagged 20 INTs, and combined with their special teams produced 5 TDs.
