FANTASY COLLEGE FOOTBALL THRU THE AGES: 1990-1999

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The Nineties.

Seems like yesterday everything go big. The Notoious B.I.G. was big; our President was big into…sax; young girls were big into boy bands (every generation has to do something embarrassingly stupid); fast-food places had their “biggie” and super-size menus.
College football got big in this decade especially on the stats page. QBs threw more, RBs ran more, receivers caught more. Schools played more, the Big Ten and the SEC grew…while the Big 8 went to the Big XII…and the Eastern schools started the…what else…the Big East.
Some of us die-hards began playing fantasy football, using the college kids. Now we had more reason to stay up late and wait for the Hawaii game. Or, the Nevada game. Or, the Boise State game. Or, the New Mexico State game…..etc etc.
The 1990s continued the trends of the 1980s, and expanded them. Passing and rushing records fell, seemingly, every weekend. Not only game, season, and career stats leaders in the NCAA record books are filled predominantly with players from the 1990s….but also per game, season, and career averages. Watch your head, you may get conked out by one of those falling records.
And, we got more games on TV. If the networks did not put more games on, the enterprising fan found them on satellite or via the internet.

FANTASY COLLEGE FOOTBALL THRU THE AGES: 1980-1989

Fab Five FreddyThe Eighties!
Fantasy college football in the 1980s….oh what it could have been! The beginning of the common era at least for most of us. ESPN and MTV became huge. We had a New Wave British Invasion in music and now what we call old-skool (rap, hip-hop) was pretty new to those in the ‘burbs. It was a time where we knew Boy George was gay….and still thought George Michael wasn’t (and, no, not the George Michael with his “Sports Machine” show).
It was also a time where college football fans got to see more than a couple games per weekend. The greatest Supreme Court ruling in the land…college football’s “Brown v Board of Education”…removed the NCAA ban on the number of a school’s TV appearances per season. College football was everywhere on the tube. Sports bars everywhere rejoiced!
The trend in college football in the 1980s was the forward pass. More and more, teams were advancing the ball downfield through the air. When Penn State in 1982 became the first National Champion to have more passing yards than rushing yards….everyone knew by then you could win with the forward pass. Legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal’s “Three things happen when you pass, and two of them are bad” quote about passing was forever eschewed.
Not that the ground game went ignored…in fact some of the biggest single-season rushing records were set in the 1980s. The passing game opened up the field for some of the greatest RBs in history.
So, flip your remote away from your MTV, put up your parachute pants, stop crushing on Molly Ringwald, and enjoy the trip back into the Eighties via Fantasy College Blitz.

The Seventies!
Fantasy college football would have competed for your time with disco, Led Zeppelin, and Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back Frenchy Fuqua’s high-heeled shoes….the ones with the goldfish swimming in the heel (yeah, but how was he as a fantasy back?)

College football became more of a staple on television, broken up occassionally by Brady Bunch and Partridge Family episodes….and that silly NCAA rule on your fave school’s TV appearances (remember….3 TV games in a season, and 5 total in 2 seasons…yeeech). The Notre Dame fans at least got to see their Domers every week…though mostly through tape-delay broadcasts on Sundays.
Does anyone remember Bill Fleming and the College Football Highlights show every Sunday? Arguably the best 30 mintes of college football, pre-ESPN.

FANTASY COLLEGE FOOTBALL THRU THE AGES: 1960-1969

The Sixties.
Peace, Love, and College Football! No protests over this at Fantasy College Blitz…..

The decade was crazy off the field: Hair grew longer, women grew wilder, and the music became more British. The Vietnam War and the civil-rights struggle were the main non-sports issues (the latter would impact the college game more, later in the decade).

College football during the 1960s began to look more like the football we see today. Few players played both offense and defense. With more athletic and football scholarships being offered, there were more spots on rosters for specialists, so we will include the top fantasy kicker of the decade beginning with the 1960s team.

The biggest development of the decade was the new interest in the forward pass. A number of teams incorporated a pro-style passing offense with huge results. The passing game helped a few schools become competitive immediately against deeper and more talented opponents, forcing those programs to change up defensive game plans to stop aerial attacks.
The major powers, though, continued to focus on the run. From Student Body Right at USC to (later) the Wishbone and Veer at other schools, the ground game developed more complexity and caused major headaches for defensive coaches. These changes, though, would have been a godsend for the fantasy college football player in this era. Quarterbacks and receivers put up better stats, and running backs piled up the yards and the TDs. In no other era could a fantasy player get one sure-fire stud player and dominate their leagues.
So while you are listening to your Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album for the 16,358th time….kick back and relax as we take you on a trip through fantasy college football from the 1960s full of tangerine trees and marmalade skies…

FANTASY COLLEGE FOOTBALL THRU THE AGES: 1950-1959

Art Luppino of Arizona The Fifties.
For fantasy college football players, it would have been an interesting time. A time where we liked Ike, drove big cars with huge tail-fins, and started to rock-n-roll a little. College football was still more popular than pro football (well, at least until the end of the decade) with top college players of the fifties having moves just as good as Elvis…

College football in the 1950s was much similar to the previous decade, although more schools handed out athletic scholarships, and, especially towards the end of the decade, platooning players on offense and defense became more common – the two-way player slowly was phased out.

We love the old Border Conference! We showed a lot of fantasy man-crushing for the old B-C in our 1940s review, and it grew even more in the 1950s. The Border Conference of 50 years ago was like the WAC, MAC, or Pac-10 of today – lots of offense and fantasy production

When compiling our list of top fantasy players of the decade, we could not decide whether to follow the format we used for the 1940s, or, base it more on modern times. We decided to use the same format for the 1950s as we did in the 1940s, since many of the top players were also the kicking specialists. Hence, we did not name a top kicker for this decade.

So, don’t be cruel….sit back and turn on your black-and-white Philco TV and watch your top fantasy players hound-dog the opposition. Of course, if you players choke you can dwell at Heartbreak Hotel.
