Very Early 2009 Fantasy College Football Preview

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Hi, I’m Topher and I’m an H2Haholic…

bradford5Head2Head.com notified me this week that registration is now open for their second annual College Football Salary Cap competition. I quickly realized how much of a degenerate I am by not only signing up over four months prior to kickoff but by attempting to set my roster for week one. Not to my surprise, the players list with their respective salaries is not yet available.

My post-spring game list of the top trio of players at each skill position doesn’t include players that could be bargains but rather players that require justification for their potential cap-eating salaries. The bargains, however, may just be the newcomers on this list. But first let’s recap my 2008 season.

Regular Season Record: 14-0
Regular Season Average Points: 197.5
Overall Finish: 58th of 5000+

On to 2009…

QUATERBACKS

Sam Bradford, Oklahoma. Bradford was H2H’s second leading scorer a year ago and the Heisman winner and more of the same can be expected in 2009. The Sooners lost receivers Juaqin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson to the draft but that should translate into more production for tight end Jermaine Gresham and wideout Ryan Broyles.
Projected salary: 20.0 million

Head2Head Playoff Tips: Final Round Value Plays

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

I got bit of a bug over the holidays so I apologize to my tens of loyal readers expecting these ratings yesterday. It’s the final round of the playoffs and if you find yourself trailing then it’s time to nail a huge lineup and overcome that deficit And if you, like me, went with Chase Daniel in round one then you’re no doubt looking to make up a lot of ground. Here are the players that can
help you do that:

Top 5 Value Quarterbacks

1) Graham Harrell, Texas Tech (19.3M, 76.15 efficiency rating)
Opponent: Mississippi in Cotton Bowl
Points in Last Game: 23
Season High: 60

Analysis: The big question here is with weeks of preparation can the Rebels figure how to contain Harrell and the high-flying Red-Raider attack? Ole Miss is on a hot streak of late winning their last five conference games and doing so with stellar defensive play. However, none of those teams can even come close to the fire power of Texas Tech. Look for Harrell to play angry here in the wake of him not being invited to the Heisman ceremony.

2) Sam Bradford, Oklahoma (20.0M, 73.23 efficiency rating)
Opponent: Florida in BCS Championship
Points in Last Game: 27
Season High: 48

Analysis: The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner versus the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner. Does it get any better than that? Although Bradford is the leading scorer in H2H (which lends to his monstrous salary), I don’t expect him to put up the same kind of numbers we’ve been seeing from him all season. I think the Sooners will focus more on their running game in an attempt to keep the Gator attack off the field. In all honesty, I think your salary cap dollars are wisely spent elsewhere.

Head2Head Playoffs Round 1: Top Value Plays

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Welcome to the playoffs! You had great season but you can forget all about it starting…now. You have zero points. You probably have an invalid lineup and even though you may have went 14-0 you could still get outcoached by the guy that went 4-10 and stumbled into the playoffs based on points.

You can say your goodbyes to guys like Chase Coffman and Jermaine Gresham. They have no place in your playoff lineups at their new prices. They earned their pay raises but with us they just earned a slab of pine. Some old faces are still pertinent but there are a lot of new ones as well, so do your homework even though I already did most of it for you.

The ratings for round one of the H2H playoffs only include those players participating in bowl games prior to January 1. Check back for round two of the H2H playoffs as those ratings will be released on December 29.

PODCAST: Bowl Preview, Head2Head style

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Interviews and podcasts are flying around here this week as we man up (geek up?) the college football bowl games that start this Saturday.

Yesterday, it was the replay of our fantasy journalist draft of our favorite bowl games, today it is an in-depth interview with the Head2Head expert analyst himself Topher Dean. Topher started his own blog at our Ning Forum and has quickly established himself as a tremendous resource for all H2H College Salary Cap fans.

The rules are different now – scoring has gone Rotisserie style and they reset all the salaries. Listen in as Vince and Topher break down the bowl games as they apply to H2H.

Head2Head Tips: Fewer games, more pressure

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Jahvid Best of Cal (Icon SMI)We’re down to the final week before the bowl season and H2H playoffs begin. Some of you are battling for playoff spots while others of you (like me) are looking to end your season as the highest scoring team in your league. This week’s top ten value plays will help you do that (again, only eligible players are being considered here and the schedule is light).

10 – Jahvid Best, RB, California (9.7M, 52.12 efficiency rating)

The Bears’ opponent this week, the Washington Huskies, are allowing 223 rushing yards and 2.5 rushing touchdowns per game. This bodes well for Best (left, Icon SMI) who can rack up serious points against respectable defenses. There is no telling what kind of damage he will inflict on the Huskies, but he should definitely be in your lineup this week.

Since Washington is about as horrid as their in-state rival Washington State, it should be known that in just over two quarters Best put up 39 on the Cougars early in the season.

9 – Pat White, QB, West Virginia (15.0M, 54.38 efficiency rating)

White isn’t the most consistent option available but when he hits, hit comes up big. I think South Florida will have a difficult time containing White this week and if you’re still flexing a quarterback, White is a more than viable option.

This will be his last home game before his skills are tested at the next level so expect a good showing for the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher amongst quarterbacks.

8 – Tim Tebow, QB, Florida (17.00M, 54.90 efficiency rating)…Read the rest of the story.
