QB Dayne Crist: will the job be all his? Icon SMI

Notre Dame

The Irish have a chance to be good on both offense and defense in 2011, and if the ghost of Declan Sullivan is happy with everyone related to him having season tickets then this season might just be a special one for the Domers.

Junior QB Dayne Crist is back as the official starter after a nasty season-ending knee injury in the loss to Tulsa, but the battle doesn’t quite have the feel of being definitively over-over, and the more mobile sophomore Tommy Rhees should see time. And don’t count out hot-shot redshirt freshman and Kelly recruit Andrew Hendrix seeing more than just mop-up time. I don’t want to say this is a developing platoon situation, but it wouldn’t surprise me to have things play out in a number of different fashions. Remember a few years ago when Tony Pike was a Heisman Hopeful for Cincinnati in 2009? Chazz Anderson had filled in admirably here and there the year prior and started that season as the ‘definite #2’ to quote the coach.  However, when Pike went down, it turned out to be a more mobile and then-unknown Zach Collaros who took the reigns of the offense.  There was considerable doubt about Pike regaining his starting job once he was again deemed healthy for action. This ND situation isn’t exactly the same, but it sort of gives off the same vibe. Don’t get me wrong, I think Crist is the guy but there is definitely some risk with the pick. 2009 INDEPENDENT ALL-FANTASY TEAM

Notre Dame Navy FootballIf the option offense was a naval fleet, then Navy QB Ricky Dobbs is it Admiral.

The Midshipmen QB is our Fantasy College Blitz 2009 Independent Fantasy Player of the Year, and highlights the FCB 2009 Independent All-Fantasy Team.

Dobbs (photo, thanks Scout.com), a junior from Douglasville, GA (Douglas County HS), led the Middies with 786 yards rushing and 22 rushing TDs, while throwing for 752 yards and another 4 TDs (stats through November 21st games).

With his 22 rushing TDs, and, with three games left to go in the 2009 season (including a bowl game for bowl-eligible Navy), Dobbs is on track to break…possibly shatter…the NCAA FBS record for rushing TDs in a single-season by a QB (tied with current Florida QB Tim Tebow, who rushed for 22 TDs in 2007).

Dobbs, however, is more than just stats.  He led the Middies to an upset of Notre Dame in South Bend a few weeks ago.  Also, in the season opener, Dobbs and Navy nearly pulled one of the biggest upsets of the decade, losing 30-26 to Ohio State in Columbus.

Joining Dobbs on the Independent All-Fantasy Team are… Read the rest of this entry →

INDEPENDENTS 2009 PREVIEW

D048360035.JPGThere may be only three Division I-FBS Independents in college football, however, that does not mean a lack of fantasy prospects for your roster.

In fact, with the re-emergence of offense at Notre Dame…..the new coaching staff at Army installing a proven, productive, triple-option offense….and the usual “300 yards and a cloud of dust” ground game at Navy, the Division I-FBS Independents will have much more fantasy impact in 2009 than they had, collectively, in previous seasons.
